Quarterback Quinn Ewers started his college career at Ohio State as one of the nation’s top-ranked recruits. By the time he ended his collegiate career at Texas, he had travelled a winding road filled with pitfalls, hairpin curves, success, and challenges. His move to the NFL provides him with a fresh start and a clean slate.
How Old is Quinn Ewers?
The 22-year-old Ewers was born on March 15, 2003. He was recruited by Ohio State out of Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, TX, in 2021. He didn’t see any action at OSU and transferred to the University of Texas in 2022. At Texas, Ewers became the starter almost immediately. Over three years, Ewers led the Longhorns to a 27-9 record.
What’s the Scoop on Quinn Ewers?
For his college career, Ewers threw for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdown passes over four seasons. He was second-team All-Big 12 in 2023 and second-team All-SEC in 2024.
His collegiate success led the Miami Dolphins to draft him 231st overall in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He entered the draft after the 2024 campaign, and scouts and evaluators had mixed reviews. He put up some solid numbers, but under the hood, there are concerns about his consistency and decision-making under pressure.
Ewers has arm talent, can throw from various arm angles, and has the confidence to finish off-platform throws. Plus, evaluators like his quick release and ability to get the ball out fast, which is a nice weapon against aggressive defenses. Ewers has decent field vision and, when he gets in rhythm, can read defenses and make accurate throws, especially on short and intermediate routes.
Again, the biggest concern with Ewers is his inconsistency. His mechanics can get thrown off under pressure, and he has a penchant for making errant throws and turnovers. His footwork becomes erratic under pressure, and he sometimes struggles to maintain his composure under collapsing pockets. He has a big arm, but his deep ball accuracy is inconsistent at best, which could limit his effectiveness in vertical passing schemes.
I’ve been a Quinn Ewers critic at times, but I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that he’s helped 5 different receiving weapons get drafted in the 4th round or higher over the last 2 years, yet the NFL didn’t feel he was more valuable than a 7th round pick

Ewers joins a quarterback room that includes an established, but oft-injured, starter in Tua Tagovailoa. Given the Dolphins’ offensive scheme under head coach Mike McDaniel, which emphasizes quick reads and timing, Ewers’ quick release and short-area accuracy could be big assets. Ewers will likely spend the season as the third-string quarterback with free agent signing Zach Wilson claiming the backup job.
However, if he can improve his decision-making and tighten up his mechanics, perhaps he can win the backup job with a solid pre-season. Practices and exhibition games should give Ewers a shot at building on his foundation of raw talent and experience in high-pressure college games. The key for him will be taking advantage of his opportunity to refine his skills and grow into a more significant member of the Dolphins offense.
