Ex-NFL Linebacker Argues Shedeur Sanders Displayed ‘First Round Stuff’ in Browns Preseason Debut

A former NFL linebacker is offering his thoughts on game film after Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders' preseason debut.

Shedeur Sanders limped into his first NFL start as a longshot third-stringer behind Joe Flacco. Twenty-four hours later, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho is watching game film and declaring Sanders showed “first-round stuff” against the Carolina Panthers.

For a quarterback battling just to make Cleveland’s roster, that kind of recognition changes everything. How did Sanders do, and has this changed his outlook?

What Makes Emmanuel Acho’s Analysis So Compelling?

Acho, who played college ball at Texas and NFL football with the Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, pulled up the game film and broke down specific moments that caught his attention. The Fox Sports analyst didn’t just offer generic praise. He dissected plays that revealed Sanders’ football intelligence under pressure.

“Shedeur Sanders identifies that the defense is in man-to-man coverage so nobody is watching him,” Acho explained while reviewing Friday night’s footage. “He also identifies that the defense does not have him contained. He escapes out of the pocket on third-and-nine and picks up the first down. He slides down to safety.”

The analysis got even more detailed when Acho examined Sanders’ ability to read coverage and deliver precise throws. Sanders had to quickly determine whether the defense was playing man-to-man or zone coverage, then execute accordingly.

“Shedeur gets the football out of his hands, but the accuracy, the accuracy of this football, between not one but two defenders, and a fully-outstretched defender? Pinpoint perfect,” Acho said.

Why Does Acho Believe Sanders Has First-Round Talent?

Acho’s most emphatic praise came when discussing a specific play that he believes demonstrated elite-level quarterbacking.

“Can Shedeur Sanders play football in the NFL? Again, we’re finding out together,” Acho said before diving into what impressed him most. What caught Acho’s attention was Sanders’ composure and field vision when facing pressure.

“Shedeur Sanders, don’t pressure, don’t get frazzled, eyes downfield,” Acho noted. “Here’s what I love. Eyes, whole time, down the field. Even with defenders in his face, eyes downfield. Watch as he starts to scramble. Eyes downfield. Watch him direct with that quick, subtle point downfield.”

After breaking down the film in detail, Acho delivered his verdict. “Can Shedeur play football in the NFL? Well, we kind of found out. It sure looks like it.”

Sanders threw two touchdown passes without an interception in Cleveland’s 30-10 victory over Carolina. While he’s been working with the third-string unit as Joe Flacco commands the first team, performances like Friday’s create roster complications that coaches love to have.

The competition for roster spots remains fierce. Sanders faces a battle with Dillon Gabriel, another 2025 NFL Draft pick by the Browns. The quarterback room also includes veterans Kenny Pickett and Tyler Huntley alongside Flacco. Sanders maximized his opportunity on Friday night, despite his own reservations after the game ended.

Browns fans hoping to see more of Sanders in the preseason will have to wait for head coach Kevin Stefanski’s decisions. But with film like this circulating and analysts like Acho taking notice, Sanders has given himself the kind of momentum that can change a career trajectory.
