‘It Does Them No Good’ — Ex-ESPN Star Makes Feelings Clear on Network ‘Turning a Blind Eye’ to Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal

Marcellus Wiley claims ESPN is ignoring the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini scandal to protect its relationship with the NFL.

Heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, the focus of the football world should have been on prospects and how teams are handling their futures. However, attention has largely focused on the story of Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini.

After pictures of the New England Patriots’ head coach and the former Athletic reporter went viral on social media, the scandal has become one of the biggest in football. Surprisingly, though, the lead voice in sports media, ESPN, has remained mum on the entire issue.

ESPN Maintaining Silence on Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini

Since the pictures from Arizona first became public, the story has caught on like wildfire. From errant interview moments to suspicious tweets, tampering allegations, and even a Spotify playlist, the internet has caught on to the story.

As a result, both parties have faced serious repercussions. For Russini, that meant stepping down from her role at The Athletic. On the other hand, Vrabel has admitted to some “difficult conversations” with his family and the Patriots organization.

Moreover, he entered counseling on the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft, stepping away from the team during a pivotal time in the offseason. But even as the story continues to rage on, ESPN continues to steer clear of the scandal.

Now, Marcellus Wiley, who spent 11 years at the network in a multitude of roles, broke down the reason for the company’s silence. “This ESPN-NFL relationship, that 10% is costing ESPN a lot. NFL like, ‘That is y’all fault. Y’all faces on all of this story, or lack of coverage. Not the NFL.'”

As a result, he believed the network would face the consequences. “ESPN is getting lit up every day for stuff like, ‘Uh, we’re turning a blind eye.'” As the “Hydration Situation” podcast continued, Wiley once again confirmed the real reason for ESPN’s silence.

“I think it does them no good to do this story because of the NFL relationship. And also maybe somebody there did know, and they’re like, ‘Look, we don’t want to open up that can of worms.'”

For the time being, it seems like that is the path the network is choosing to continue with this story. However, as the weeks pass and more details keep coming to light in this scandal, it might become too big a situation to let remain unaddressed.
