Mia Bieniemy, the 57-year-old wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot Sunday night at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Virginia, and is hospitalized with serious injuries, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor.
Eric Bieniemy was not home at the time, as he was in St. Joseph, Missouri, at Missouri Western State’s campus for the Chiefs’ training camp.

Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Leah Paul confirmed that police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn at 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, “Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, of Ashburn, was arrested and charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he was held without bond.”
ESPN reported Monday morning that Mia Bieniemy is hospitalized in stable condition, according to a source. The Chiefs released a brief statement saying they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family” but provided no further details. Neither Bieniemy nor his family had released a public statement as of Monday morning.
Taylor also provided an update on Bieniemy’s wife, writing, “Mia Bieniemy is in stable condition, according to a source.”
The news broke on what should have been one of the most optimistic stretches of Bieniemy’s coaching career. Matt Nagy’s contract expired after the 2025 season, and head coach Andy Reid moved quickly to bring his former coordinator back into the fold.

For Patrick Mahomes, getting Bieniemy back means reuniting with the play-caller who helped unlock his best football.
Bieniemy held the same title from 2018 through 2022, a five-season run in which the Chiefs finished no lower than sixth in scoring and won two Super Bowls.
Bieniemy’s return followed a winding three-year journey away from the franchise. He left for the Washington Commanders in 2023 to call plays and improve his head coaching candidacy, but the team stumbled to a 4-13 record, and he wasn’t retained by the new staff.
He spent the 2024 season at UCLA as associate head coach and offensive coordinator, departing after a 5-7 campaign, before landing with the Chicago Bears as running backs coach in 2025 under Ben Johnson.
The Chiefs brought Bieniemy back to rebuild an offense that collapsed without him, with Mahomes recovering from a torn ACL and the rushing attack ranked among the NFL’s worst in 2025.
