Despite Trade Rumors and Cryptic Comments, Eagles Rework Contract To Keep Super Bowl Starter in Philly

Dallas Goedert is staying with the Philadelphia Eagles, agreeing to a reworked contract and putting an end to the speculation about his future.

Dallas Goedert is staying in Philadelphia. The longtime Eagles tight end appeared to be on his way out of the Super Bowl champions during the offseason, with the team getting trade offers for him.

However, they have now agreed on a reworked deal that will keep Goedert in Philadelphia for at least his eighth season in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles Bring Dallas Goedert Back on Reworked Contract

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that, after speculation that a separation was in the works, the two sides put an end to the noise and agreed to a new deal.

“The #Eagles and TE Dallas Goedert have agreed to a reworked deal for this season, as @Jeff_McLane stated. The team had trade offers for Goedert during the draft. He was in the loop. Decided to remain with the team and selflessly restructured to try running it back.”

Goedert was entering the final year of a four-year, $57 million contract extension that he signed with the team in 2021. His cap number made him a prime candidate to be cut, as he carried an $11.7 million cap charge. Details of the new deal are yet to be made available, but it would likely reduce the cap number for this season.

Dallas Goedert’s History with the Philadelphia Eagles

Dallas Goedert has been a prominent part of the Eagles’ offense since being drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2018. He was brought in to replace Brent Celek, who played ten years for the Eagles.

He arrived after the Super Bowl LII win, but Philadelphia continued to enjoy plenty of postseason success after Goedert’s selection. The Eagles made the playoffs in six of the first seven seasons Goedert was on the team, including last year’s Super Bowl LIX victory.

Goedert has played a role in their success. He averages 57 receptions, 664 receiving yards, and four touchdowns a season. In the Super Bowl LIX 40-22 thumping of the Kansas City Chiefs, Goedert had two receptions for 27 yards.

Last season was a mixed bag for Goedert. He set a single-game career high with 170 receiving yards in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints. However, he missed six regular-season games due to separate hamstring and knee injuries.

The absences helped lead to his lowest numbers in regular-season receptions and receiving yards since his rookie season, but he still projects to head into the 2025 season as the team’s primary option at the position ahead of promising fourth-year pro Grant Calcaterra.

Now officially confirmed to be returning for the 2025 season, Goedert is the third-longest tenured player on the Eagles roster, behind offensive tackle Lane Johnson and kicker Jake Elliott.
