‘Back Shoulder Fade God’ — Eagles Receive Praise and Massive A+ Draft Grade for Makai Lemon Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles earn an A+ NFL draft grade for selecting USC wide receiver Makai Lemon to boost the offense.

The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t just fill a need in the draft. They may have landed one of the most dynamic playmakers in the class. By selecting Makai Lemon, Philadelphia earned an A+ grade, as the offense looks to reload for another Super Bowl push.

With questions swirling around the future of A.J. Brown, the Eagles needed a receiver who could create separation, win in space, and produce right away. Lemon checks all of those boxes and then some.

How Makai Lemon Can Provide an Immediate Boost to the Eagles’ Offense

Coming off a breakout 2025 season at USC, Lemon posted 79 catches for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with a top-five national PFSN WR Impact Score of 85.1. According to PFSN’s scouting report, he blends sharp route running, elite body control, and strong hands into a skill set that translates immediately.

At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, he plays bigger than his frame suggests, especially in contested situations. That combination has him firmly in the WR1 conversation and makes this pick feel like both a present and future win for Philadelphia.

“I like this in the short term,” said PFSN NFL draft analyst Ian Cummings on the “Football Debate Club” live draft show. “I really like him as a separator and a YAC threat, just because of his agility. He sees the field incredibly well with the ball in his hands, and he’s really dynamic coming in and out of his breaks.”

That separation ability is what stands out on tape. Lemon consistently creates space with his footwork and tempo, allowing quarterbacks to trust him as a reliable target on timing routes.

He does not just win early in routes, either. His awareness against zone coverage and ability to adjust on the fly make him a quarterback-friendly option.

“He’s an intelligent, rough runner,” Cummings said. “Knows how to adjust his tempo depending on the coverage he’s seeing.”

That shows up after the catch as well. Lemon is not just catching passes and going down. He turns short throws into chunk plays with quickness and vision. For an Eagles offense that occasionally stalled last season, that’s exactly the player they need.

“I like this in the short term as a little bit of a boost to help get that Eagles offense back on track and get them over the hump as they’re competing for a Super Bowl again here in the long term,” Cummings added.

What an A.J. Brown Trade Would Mean for Lemon’s Long-Term Role

The bigger picture makes this pick even more interesting. If the Eagles move on from Brown, Lemon steps into a much larger role alongside DeVonta Smith. And based on his profile, he is built for it.

“With A.J. Brown expected to get traded to the New England Patriots, assuming that does happen, you need another receiver alongside DVS,” PFSN NFL draft analyst Jacob Infante said.

From a traits standpoint, Lemon offers versatility that fits multiple roles. He can line up inside as a power slot, win on the outside with timing and technique, and contribute in the red zone despite his size. His body control and timing make him a dangerous contested-catch weapon, which is where the “back shoulder fade” reputation comes into play.

“You look at the run after catchability, the ability to separate independently. Even though he’s got shorter arms, smaller guy, relative to you know the normal catch radius, he’s a back shoulder fade god. I think Lemon is more than capable of being a long-term starting option, and an impact player for Philadelphia here, great value,” Cummings said.

That value is what ties everything together. The Eagles addressed an immediate need while also preparing for a potential roster shift.
