Eagles Complete Trade for $30.75 Million Veteran to Bolster Roster As Philly Tries to Repeat As Super Bowl Champions

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is next week, and the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a transaction on Wednesday afternoon.

The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching with teams having to decide who to deal by November 4. Front offices are evaluating their rosters to see who is expendable and where upgrades are needed. The New York Jets got their first win of the season in Week 8, but still sold away a piece to plan ahead for next season.

Jets and Eagles Strike a Deal

The Jets are sending CB Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Philadelphia in return for WR John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

The Jets have pieces that they could sell off to contenders and a lot of eyes will be on their roster. Carter is the first player to be moved, and could be the first of many, or the only one traded. The Eagles were ready to pounce and took advantage of New York’s interest in trading pieces away for future assets.

The Jets needed help at receiver badly while the Eagles needed to add depth at cornerback. New York recently acquired CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. from the Titans, which put Carter’s Jet future in the air. In a win-win situation, the Jets got a receiver that they could desperately use alongside Garrett Wilson once he returns, while the Eagles get a plug-and-play corner right now.

The Eagles were struggling at the corner position, especially on the outside. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke about the possibility of having Cooper DeJean move to the outside. Carter has predominantly been a nickel corner in his career, just like DeJean. The Eagles have a decision to make on which of the two will be tasked with covering near the boundary.

Carter signed a three-year, $30.75 million contract extension with the Jets that expires at the conclusion of the 2027 season. He has had a tough start to the season, as teams have had success throwing at him, and with Brownlee’s addition, the Jets were ready to send him away.

Carter hasn’t been the same player after he signed his extension as he struggled heavily with injuries in 2024. It has affected his performance and he hasn’t recaptured his form. Now with a change of scenery, a clean slate could help him return to the top nickel corner that earned him the highest contract for a slot cornerback at the time.

The Eagles acquired CB Jakorian Bennett in the offseason to help with their cornerback room, but he finds himself on injured reserve. He should return soon, but the Eagles had to make a move and they did that by bringing in Carter. It will be interesting to see how this secondary shapes up with Carter, DeJean, and Quinyon Mitchell. This should be a tough secondary to beat, but time will tell if Carter can regain his best form.
