Madden NFL’s Developers Agree $55,000,000,000 Deal With Saudi Arabia’s PIF and Others To Go Private

The ever-changing face of sports video games shifted again, possibly the Madden series. From the outset, sports video games started as a mild diversion from the hardcore gaming aspect. While people lined up to play first-person shooter or fantasy-based games, sports stood in the relative background for decades. Now, it appears that a seismic occurrence could transform the genre once again.

EA Sports Sold, the Future of the Madden Franchise Still Unknown

When Electronic Arts launched the first generation of sports games, including the Madden series, no one probably knew what that could eventually lead to. Now, the Madden release date has become a quasi-national holiday, with gamers sitting down to immerse themselves in the football experience. News broke regarding a possible change to those plans.

Now, a new company will be at the helm. A Saudi-led company, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, purchased the gaming giant for $55 billion in cash. EA issued a press release touting the deal.

Our creative and passionate teams at EA have delivered extraordinary experiences for hundreds of millions of fans, built some of the world’s most iconic IP, and created significant value for our business. This moment is a powerful recognition of their remarkable work,” said Andrew Wilson, Chairman & CEO of Electronic Arts. ”

The statement appears to tout Electronic Arts’ successful past but does not provide any insight into what the potential future holds for the game. What we do know is that the shareholders will be bought out, and the company will go private. This means that they will no longer answer to investors and will produce content the way they see fit without the constraint of questioning and oversight.

Later, in the same article, a reiteration of the financial aspect took place.

“We are pleased that this transaction delivers immediate and certain cash value to our stockholders while strengthening EA’s ability to continue building the communities and experiences that define the future of entertainment.”

The press release discusses nothing regarding the future of the game. Similarly, it does not delve into the aspects of the game that made it unique. First, Madden used music from popular artists and genres. How will that survive, being owned by a country’s investment firm that does not possess the same passion or national involvement?

Furthermore, how did it affect the summer timetable in which Madden games are released and the attention surrounding it? How will the NFL deal with the new ownership, and how will that affect the relationship? EA, its customers, and partners may need to sit down and hash out potential issues, as the future of the Madden franchise seems unclear.
