The biggest topic of conversation after the 2025 NFL Draft was Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. While most experts had him going somewhere in the first round, he fell all the way to Round 5, which surprised everyone.
Drew Bledsoe Remarks on Shedeur Sanders’ Draft Slide
Former four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Bledsoe joined “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” show recently to chat about the confusion regarding Sanders’ draft slide.
“I thought he was a first-round talent…It’s still sort of a mystery to me why he fell as far as he did…He didn’t have a ton of help up front.”
Whether it was his pre-draft interviews, the family that he comes from, or something that people saw on film, teams felt like Sanders wasn’t worthy of being a high pick. Now, he joins a Browns quarterback room that is filled with experience and youth at the same time.
Will Sanders Get Any Playing Time With the Browns?
At this point, it’s not a foregone conclusion that Sanders will even earn a spot on the roster this year. Along with him in Cleveland’s quarterback room sits veterans Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel (who the Browns drafted two rounds ahead of Sanders).
Assuming each of these quarterbacks can play up to their potential, Sanders’ odds of getting any sort of playing time during the regular season could be low. Flacco’s experience, especially in the Browns organization, is key. He is a former Super Bowl MVP after all.
Pickett, meanwhile, has had his moments at the NFL level and has experience already as a starter. Then, as mentioned, Gabriel was drafted higher than Sanders and excelled more at the college level.
All of this is to say that Sanders will need to bring his absolute best every single day if he hopes to stick around in Cleveland. With so much competition in the QB room, nothing is guaranteed. He’ll need to impress the coaching staff not just in games but in every practice, meeting, and film session.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski may not want to keep four quarterbacks, especially if other position groups require extra depth due to injuries or roster needs. Sanders’ path to making the team is an uphill climb, and the decisions in the coming months will be critical. This is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing QB battles to watch as the offseason progresses.
