The New England Patriots have a very positive outlook on their future, perhaps for the first time since Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Drake Maye was a sensational rookie, earning Pro Bowl honors as an alternate. Over this offseason, they’ve addressed virtually every concern on the roster, building an excellent team around Maye.
An upgrade in head coach with Mike Vrabel, a loaded free agency haul, and the hiring of new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has left the fanbase with optimism. But for Maye, McDaniels’ hiring has him uber-excited for the upcoming season.
Drake Maye Overjoyed With Josh McDaniels’ Addition
Last year, the Patriots’ offense was far from excellent. At 26, they were well in the bottom-third of the league on PFSN’s Offense+ metric. A rookie quarterback, a porous offensive line, and less-than-stellar weapons all contributed to their mediocre performance.
However, the 2025 season promises to be very different, on the back of the change in offensive coordinator alone, and Maye knows it. “Yeah, I think it’ll be great. The guys we had last year, I really enjoyed, and so far with McDaniels, it’s been awesome,” he said during a conversation with the press.
“He’s been an offensive coordinator, he’s been a head coach. He does it at a high level. His stuff works. The proof’s in the pudding. He’s coached a lot of different guys,” Maye said. McDaniels, a veteran in the coaching circles for over two decades, has certainly seen it all.
Drake Maye’s thoughts on #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels:

And his ties to New England are nothing short of legendary. Joining the team in 2001 as a personnel assistant, he quickly rose through the ranks and held the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator roles for the team.
During that time, he was the brainchild of the operations for the first run of New England’s dynasty and for evolving Brady into the ultimate QB. “He coached the best to ever do it, so it’s pretty cool getting to watch old things Tom and see how he does it.”
However, he doesn’t view Brady as the only source, instead pointing to the success virtually everyone has had with McDaniels leading the offense. “Bunch of different guys play at a high level in the offense, not just Tom, so it’s been cool to watch and I’m learning the ways and learning the ins and outs of it.”
The two most successful periods in the history of the Patriots organization came with McDaniels as a member on the sidelines. A part of the team for each of its six Super Bowl wins, his arrival should be a blessing for the team as a whole.
