The Washington Commanders are once again at the center of controversy, but this time the pressure isn’t coming from inside the NFL.
U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited debate around the franchise’s name, demanding a return to the “Washington Redskins” and he’s tying it to a potential stadium deal in the nation’s capital.
Trump Threatens Stadium Deal Over Name Change
In a series of social media posts, Trump called on the Commanders to abandon the “ridiculous moniker” and return to their previous identity, which the franchise dropped in 2020 amid nationwide calls to retire offensive Native American mascots. The team officially became the Commanders in 2022.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this… Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen… OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
The Washington “Whatever’s” should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive…

He followed up with a bolder warning:
“I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins’ and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders,’ I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.”
My statement on the Washington Redskins has totally blown up, but only in a very positive way. I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original “Washington Redskins,” and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, “Washington Commanders,” I won’t…

According to Reuters, this threat is directly tied to the team’s proposed move back to the District of Columbia. The Commanders were recently cleared to build a $3.7 billion stadium at the site of the old RFK Stadium, with $2.7 billion of that amount financed by the franchise itself.
The new site is projected to be the centerpiece of the team’s return to Washington, D.C., after decades in Landover, Maryland. Per reports, Trump’s intervention has added a political twist to what was already a high-stakes negotiation.
Commanders Stay Silent On Trump’s Threats
The Commander’s organization has not publicly responded to Trump’s remarks. The name change from “Redskins” was initially prompted by sponsors and civil rights groups who viewed the term as derogatory and culturally insensitive. Indigenous advocacy organizations such as the National Congress of American Indians and the Association on American Indian Affairs remain firmly against any rollback.
Still, some fans have long called for the return of the “Redskins” name, citing tradition and nostalgia. Trump’s message appears aimed at that demographic, noting a “massive clamoring” and asserting that Native American people want the name restored.
However, recent polling shows growing acceptance of the “Commanders” name locally, with 50% of D.C. area residents now viewing it favourably, which undermines the notion of widespread support for a return to the old nickname.
Trump also extended his comments to Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians, formerly the Indians, stating:
“Cleveland should do the same with the Cleveland Indians… Indians are being treated very unfairly. MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN (MIGA)!”
While it’s unclear if Trump’s threats will influence actual policy or the franchise’s naming decision, the Commanders now find themselves navigating not just internal pressures but public scrutiny at the highest political levels.
