Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa Discussed Opening Loss to the Indianapolis Colts

The Dolphins, despite playing in the same division as the Buffalo Bills, think they still have a shot at being the one divisional opponent to challenge the Bills for AFC East supremacy.

The season did not start well, as the Indianapolis Colts walked in and handed Miami a stunning 33-8 defeat at Lucas Oil Stadium. While not the end of the metaphorical world, the loss did make Tagovailoa examine not only his play but also that of his teammates.

“Tua: “The way we lost? Nobody pays, none of the fans pay to watch the Miami Dolphins put up 8 points and to watch the other team drop 30 on them, a lot of things we have to look at. We have to look in the mirror. It starts with me.”

In going 14 of 23 for 114 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, Tagovailoa’s play executed what looked like a poor Miami defensive effort. The Dolphins surrendered 418 yards to a Colts team many expected to struggle.

Veteran Daniel Jones threw for 272 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he did not look rattled or rushed as he made the right choices and seemed confident when leading the offense. Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie tight end Tyler Warren combined for 13 catches and 156 yards.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins did not look strong enough offensively, mustering 211 yards behind Tagovailoa. The quarterback detailed a mistake he made that could’ve turned the tide.

“The way we lost? Nobody pays, none of the fans pay to watch the Miami Dolphins put up 8 points and to watch the other team drop 30 on them, a lot of things we have to look at. We have to look in the mirror. It starts with me.”

Hill caught four of his six targets for 40 yards and did not play as large a role as many believed he would.

Omar Kelly, from the Miami Herald, made an observation that could be troubling.

“I’m puzzled that #Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa doesn’t know most of his interceptions in bunches.”

Not knowing that you throw a cluster interception can mean two things. Either Tagovailoa is so dialed in that he forgets the last play, which is a hallmark of a good quarterback. Or, he makes the same mistakes without correction, and that could definitely lead to losses.

Miami gets a chance to rebound next Sunday when it hosts the New England Patriots (0-1). Can they notch a crucial divisional win?
