The Miami Dolphins are 0-2, and their 2025 season is off to a disastrous start. After an embarrassing 33-8 blowout loss in Week 1 to the Indianapolis Colts, Miami dropped its home opener Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, falling 33-27 to the New England Patriots.
Head coach Mike McDaniel entered the game under scrutiny, with fans unfurling a banner that read “Fire Grier. Fire McDaniel” and flying it above the stadium before kickoff. Now, with the Dolphins opening a season with back-to-back losses for the first time since 2020, the pressure on McDaniel has only intensified.
What Did Mike McDaniel Say After the Game?
The Dolphins’ offense finally showed some signs of optimism, with Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle all producing big plays. But it all crumbled late, as they gave up a fourth-quarter lead on special teams.
Even after falling behind inside two minutes following a field goal from New England, Miami had one last chance to pull out the win against its AFC East divisional rival. However, Tagovailoa was sacked on fourth-and-12 at the Patriots’ 28-yard line with 48 seconds remaining.

“I’m very frustrated — there’s some coaches and players that did not execute communication with the game on the line,” McDaniel said as he reacted to the final drive post-game, as reported by ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques. “Our communication and substitution was not up to par — but ultimately I hold responsibility for all things.”
Anthony Weaver, the second-year defensive coordinator, will be under tremendous pressure if the unit continues to be an issue for Miami. This is especially concerning as the Patriots entered Week 2 with a struggling offense in their loss to the Raiders in Week 1.
The Dolphins’ defense allowed the Colts to score on all seven drives in the opener, then gave up points on New England’s first three possessions Sunday. While the front seven generated three sacks, the secondary struggled to contain an underwhelming Patriots wide receiver group.

What’s Next for the Dolphins?
The Dolphins don’t have much time to regroup from their 0-2 start, with a quick turnaround for Thursday Night Football on the road against the Buffalo Bills. That’s followed by a Week 4 divisional clash with the New York Jets.
If the Dolphins fail to pull off an upset in the next two games, a 0-4 start could effectively bury their playoff hopes before October in an AFC stacked with contenders. Furthermore, such a start could seal McDaniel’s fate in Miami, as pressure mounts on the fourth-year head coach to inspire a turnaround.
