Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel Makes Feelings Clear on Jonnu Smith’s Future in Miami Amid Trade Rumors

Jonnu Smith’s name has been swirling in trade rumors, but Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel isn’t buying into the speculation. The Pro Bowl tight end has a career-best season in 2024, but that hasn’t stopped his name from being linked to potential moves.

Despite the talks, Smith remains an essential part of Miami’s offensive scheme, and McDaniel made sure to address the speculation head-on.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Interest in Jonnu Smith Was Real

The Pittsburgh Steelers were reportedly in trade discussions with the Dolphins about acquiring Smith, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The talks stemmed from Smith’s desire for a reworked contract, as he’s entering the final year of his two-year, $8.4 million deal.

Smith’s connection to Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith fueled the speculation. The two worked together in Tennessee and Atlanta, leading many to believe Pittsburgh was looking to reunite them. However, despite the interest, the Steelers ultimately pivoted to free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis instead, who is visiting Pittsburgh.

While Smith could have fit in Pittsburgh’s scheme, Miami wasn’t actively shopping him. The Dolphins value what he brings to the offense, particularly his ability to create mismatches against linebackers and safeties. His blend of size, speed, and blocking ability makes him an asset in a balanced attack that features playmakers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

McDaniel’s Firm Stance on Smith’s Future

Despite all the outside speculation, McDaniel made it clear that he isn’t considering a future without Smith. When asked if he was confident the tight end would remain on the roster, he gave a direct, no-nonsense answer.

“I haven’t considered anything other than I want him on the team and he wants to be here.”

The statement, reported by Miami Dolphins journalist Joe Schad, reinforces the idea that the team sees Smith as a key piece of their offense moving forward.

McDaniel’s comments put any lingering doubts to rest, for now. However, with contract negotiations looming, the speculation could resurface closer to training camp.

Smith’s Impact and What’s Next in Miami

Smith had a career-best season in 2024, setting the franchise records for a Dolphins tight end. Smith amounted to 88 receptions, 884 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. His ability to stretch the field and serve as a reliable red-zone target made him a key piece of Miami’s offense.

Beyond his production, Smith’s locker room presence is another reason Miami values him highly. His leadership and veteran experience help younger players develop, and his rapport with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has only grown since arriving in Miami.

Despite the trade rumors, Smith appears set to stay in Miami, at least for now. If the Dolphins do not extend him, speculation could ramp up again. But for now, McDaniel’s stance sends a clear message that the tight end is staying put.
