Diego Pavia is coming off a spectacular 2025 college football season with the Vanderbilt Commodores. He finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, but issued a controversial statement to the voters after he didn’t win it. He was asked about his maturity level in the aftermath of the NFL Combine, to which he had a questionable response.
Diego Pavia Is Being Questioned About His Maturity Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft
Pavia apparently felt as though he did enough to win the Heisman Trophy this year, but Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza received significantly more votes. Shortly after the ceremony, the Vanderbilt star shared a controversial social media post, including a picture of himself surrounded by supporters and a caption of, “F**k All the Voters.”
He later posted a lengthy apology to his social media account in response to the massive criticism he received for his controversial post. His apology apparently wasn’t enough for his reaction to be forgotten, as he is now being questioned about his level of maturity. The quarterback prospect responded to this idea during the 2026 NFL Combine.
“Coach Lea always pressed that your frontal lobe isn’t fully developed until you’re 25, and I just turned 24, so I’ve got like 365 days to go,” stated Pavia.

His response is likely an effort to make light of the situation, which will probably spark polarizing opinions about his maturity in question. Some may take issue that he’s essentially making a joke about it, while others will presumably praise him for not taking the media noise too seriously.
While it can surely be debated whether or not his maturity is suited to be quarterback in the NFL, his elite contributions on the football field make him an intriguing prospect. He impressively topped PFSN’s Impact Rankings for the 2025 season and was the only college football player to finish higher than Mendoza.
Despite his incredible production, Pavia is extremely undersized, listed at just 5’9″ and 198 pounds based on his measurements at the Senior Bowl. This makes his outlook questionable at best, and adding potential attitude issues probably doesn’t help his case to be drafted this year.
Most quarterback prospects would have no chance of being drafted at his size measurements, but he did enough on the field for Vanderbilt last season to earn him a potential look.
He’s currently expected to be a late-round flier, if a team thinks he’s mature enough to deserve a shot at a roster spot.
