As the dust settles on the 2026 NFL Draft, the undrafted free agent (UDFA) market is already heating up with intriguing prospects looking for the right fit.
Few names in this year’s class generate as much polarized debate as former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.
Why Diego Pavia Is a Ground-and-Pound Fit for the Philadelphia Eagles
Standing at 5-foot-10, Pavia lacks the prototypical frame and top-tier arm strength of a traditional NFL signal-caller. Yet, his gritty play style, fierce competitiveness, and exceptional dual-threat capabilities have kept him firmly on the professional radar.
Now, one heavy Super Bowl contender has been floated as a surprisingly logical destination for the resilient rookie: the Philadelphia Eagles.
Pavia’s journey to the professional ranks is defined by consistently overcoming the odds. After elevating New Mexico State and seamlessly transitioning to the SEC to lead Vanderbilt, he proved capable of producing against elite defensive competition. He was even a finalist for the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
His ability to operate run-pass options (RPOs), manipulate the quick-pass game, and make improvisational plays outside the structure makes him a fascinating prospect.
T.J. Randall from PFSN recently highlighted this stylistic synergy, noting that the Eagles present a unique environment that could maximize a quarterback with Pavia’s specific athletic traits.
“Unlike their fellow avian franchise, the Eagles selected a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft,” Randall observed. “They, too, have an entrenched starter in the sturdy and sufficiently athletic Jalen Hurts, whose game is not predicated on attacking the middle of the field.”
The Eagles have built a formidable identity around dominating the trenches and utilizing their quarterback as a dynamic plus-one in the running game. According to Randall, this culture is exactly why Pavia fits the developmental mold.
“Philadelphia subscribes to dependency on the pairing of running back Saquon Barkley and a sturdy offensive line to play the older-school, ball-control style of offense,” Randall explained. “Hurts is involved in said ground game, so Pavia’s addition would seemingly make sense.”
Pavia’s analytical profile only bolsters the argument for bringing him into camp. According to the PFSN CFB QB Impact Metric, which assigns a comprehensive grade based on clean pocket performance, designed rushing success, and clutch high-leverage situations, Pavia earned an astonishing 94.8 overall score.
This phenomenal grade ranked him as the No. 1 overall quarterback in the metric for the 2025 season, surpassing highly touted prospects from across the nation.
Furthermore, the Eagles’ quarterback room could soon undergo a minor shuffle, creating a potential opening for a gritty, cost-effective competitor like Pavia to claim a specialized role.

“Not that I am in any way comparing them as players, but there has been much speculation surrounding Philadelphia’s possible trading of reserve quarterback Tanner McKee,” Randall added. “Perhaps that could enhance Pavia’s likelihood of a longer-term presence.”
Ultimately, Pavia is a specialized playmaker who thrives when the odds are stacked against him. If Philadelphia decides to invest in his undeniable toughness as a UDFA, it might just uncover a highly capable backup perfectly tailored to its hard-nosed offensive identity.
