Did ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Play in the NFL or College? A Look at the Draft Analyst’s Revolutionary Career Path

How did Mel Kiper Jr. become such a mainstream name in football? Did he have any prior experience at the collegiate or professional level?

For any NFL fan, the name Mel Kiper Jr. is synonymous with the summer months. For over four decades, he has been a constant during the offseason, particularly around the NFL Draft. And with the 2026 NFL Draft now here, this year is no different; Kiper will once again share his opinions on the incoming class.

One of the most legendary names when it comes to the draft and widely considered the originator of the “draftniks” now prevalent across sports media, Kiper had a football background of his own. But how far did he go before stepping away?

Revisiting Mel Kiper Jr.’s Playing Days

Kiper doesn’t have a long playing history, as he never played football at the college or professional level. An arm injury during his time as a junior varsity baseball player also contributed to Kiper’s early exit from competitive sports.

Nevertheless, his lack of on-field experience didn’t stop him from becoming one of the most respected voices in sports media.

Kiper’s impact on the NFL is tough to measure. He is widely credited with creating the concept of the mock draft and making it mainstream. He became a household name in 1984 when he joined ESPN.

Famously signing a contract for just $400, Kiper was encouraged by then-Baltimore Colts assistant general manager Ernie Accorsi to turn his draft analysis into a full-time business. It was part of ESPN’s early push to make the NFL Draft a major event after first televising it in 1980, just four years before Kiper joined the network.

Soon after, Kiper became a regular part of ESPN’s programming, especially during the offseason. Along with former ESPN analyst Todd McShay, his weekly mock drafts and signature “big board,”  where he ranked the top 25 players, helped shape the modern coverage of the NFL Draft.

Though his own sports career didn’t take off, Kiper’s presence in the sports media landscape earned him spots in multiple video games. He served as a draft expert in NFL Head Coach and Madden NFL.

2026 NFL Draft Preview

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to select Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, and then from there, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen. This is a very weak quarterback class; in fact, there’s a real possibility that Mendoza will be the only QB selected on Day 1, which is rare in today’s NFL.

Over the last 24 years, there have only been two NFL Drafts where a single QB was picked in the first round: 2022 (Kenny Pickett at No. 20) and 2013 (EJ Manuel at No. 16).

Not only is this class weak on QBs, but it is also full of polarizing prospects and studs who play typically undervalued positions. That means each team’s board may look drastically different, and there could be a ton of surprises tonight as a result.

There are also plenty of trade rumors swirling in the lead-up to the 2026 NFL Draft, as many teams are reportedly looking to move up and down the board. Also, names like Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown, Dallas Cowboys WR George Pickens, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr., and Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. are among the veterans who have surfaced in trade rumors.
