The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal has been arguably the most talked-about story of the NFL offseason, and now its reach has extended well beyond football. Jason Whitlock dragged the controversy into the basketball world when he compared college basketball insider Jeff Goodman to Russini during a heated exchange on X.
The spat began after Whitlock posted an unverified claim that the Indiana Fever is planning to trade Caitlin Clark to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Goodman responded to the trade rumor by mocking Whitlock and said, “trying to break news for the first time in his life,” and added, “This should age well.”
Whitlock wasted no time firing back and wrote, “Lol. Jeff try to have some ethics and integrity for the first time in your life. You’re the original Dianna Russini, and everybody knows it.”
The reference carries weight given what has unfolded between Vrabel and Russini over the past three months. Photos published by Page Six in early April showed Vrabel and Russini holding hands and hugging at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona. The situation escalated when Page Six published additional photos that reportedly showed the two kissing at a New York City bar in March 2020.
TMZ later published images allegedly showing them together at a Mississippi casino in January 2024, as well as images of them renting a private boat in 2021, when Russini was pregnant with her first child.
Vrabel, due to the scandal, did not attend the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to seek counseling, while Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14.
Since Goodman has also built extensive relationships with college basketball coaches, players, and scouts throughout his career, Whitlock might have been suggesting that he might have done it in a similar manner to how Russini has been perceived.
However, no verified allegations of Goodman’s conduct similar to the Vrabel-Russini situation have surfaced publicly. Whitlock also has a long history of provocative commentary, and his recent comments might lack evidence as well.

As for the rumor that started the fight, no credible WNBA reporter has confirmed any plans by the Fever to trade Clark, who remains under contract on her four-year rookie deal through the 2027 season.
Clark is averaging 19.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game this season. It will be interesting to see whether Whitlock’s prediction proves prophetic or whether his jab at Goodman is part of another exchange that ages poorly.
