Miami Dolphins Add Third Quarterback via Seventh-Round Pick

The Miami Dolphins only had two quarterbacks on the roster going into the 2025 NFL Draft. Backup Skylar Thompson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, and the Dolphins replaced him with former New York Jets/Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson.

Tua Tagovailoa will now be the ‘veteran’ quarterback on that Miami Dolphins roster, with Wilson backing him up in 2025. In an attempt to fill out the roster and add another quarterback with potential, the Dolphins drafted Ewers with the 231st overall pick.

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant had a strong opinion on the pick, putting a little pressure on the young Longhorns product as he enters the NFL.

“I like Quinn Ewers over Tua already. He’s Dan Marino 2.0 and yes.. I said it.”

It’s certainly a ‘hot take’ from the former Cowboys No. 88, and it was met with some hostility on ‘X’.

Fans called out the Tagovailoa disrespect, with fans assuming Dez has not been watching much college football this past season.

Ewers is a talented quarterback, but to make a player comparison with Marino before his feet even touch the ground in Miami is a wildly unnecessary amount of pressure to apply to a seventh-round draft pick.

Miami Dolphins Add Late Value in 2025 Draft

The Quinn Ewers pick is good value in the seventh round of the draft. He’s young and he has potential, and he was once the most coveted high school quarterback in the country.

Chris Grier and the Dolphins didn’t pick in the third or the fourth round after trading those picks away. The Dolphins packaged up their picks to move up into the early second round and select Jonah Savaiinaea out of Arizona.

When they finally got on the clock again in the fifth round, they needed to make their picks count. Cornerback Jason Marshall Jr, out of Florida, and running back Ollie Gordon II, out of Oklahoma State, stood out as potential highlight picks for Miami on the third day.

The Dolphins need to be able to find contributors in the 2025 draft, considering the lack of depth at multiple positions on the roster. Defensive tackle was one of their biggest needs heading into the week, a position they prioritized with first-round draft pick Kenneth Grant out of Michigan.

Miami then added another defensive tackle in the fifth round, selecting Jordan Phillips out of Maryland.
