DeVonta Smith Injury Update: Eagles Star WR Dealing With Hamstring Issue Ahead of Super Bowl 59

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith was limited in practice on Wednesday, Feb. 6, the first practice the Eagles held in New Orleans, the site of Super Bowl 59. He has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, which caused him to miss all drills last week.

    What Is DeVonta Smith’s Injury?

Smith suffered a hamstring injury in Week 11 against the Washington Commanders, and he’d return to action in Week 14 vs. the Carolina Panthers.

The talented Alabama alum played most of the offensive reps during the NFC Championship Game against the Commanders, notching 59 of the offense’s 71 snaps.

He missed some practice time last week, but that was due to rest and load management. He was limited in practice so far, but he’s anticipated to be a full participant as the Super Bowl draws closer.

Will Smith Play in the Super Bowl?

Smith is listed on the injury report but has no injury designation. If his status stays the same throughout the final report (revealed on Friday, Feb. 7), it is anticipated Smith will play in the game.

In his last three games against the Chiefs, including Super Bowl 57, he has had at least six catches and 99 yards. For Smith, who has not scored this postseason, he has beaten the Chiefs’ secondary with regularity.

Hamstring problems have a lingering effect on wide receivers and can present problems if not allowed enough time to fully heal.

Smith should be able to suit up for the game, but his effectiveness could be severely limited if the injury continues to be a problem. However, Smith is anticipated to play in the biggest game of the season.

How Would Smith’s Absence Impact the Eagles?

If Smith cannot go, the Eagles will turn to A.J. Brown to play a bigger role in the offense. One can also expect to see tight end Dallas Goedert to have more targets. Further, when all else fails, run the ball more with Saquon Barkley.

Smith is a WR2 for the Eagles, but he is still a crucial component of their passing attack. He has 4,011 receiving yards over the last four seasons with 27 touchdowns.

Time will tell if Smith plays in Super Bowl 59, but due to his lack of injury designation, it appears as though he will be good to go minus a setback.
