The Pittsburgh Steelers quietly secured one of their most consistent defenders on Monday, June 16, extending safety DeShon Elliott through the 2027 season. The two-year, $12.5 million extension came with $9.21 million in guarantees and marked a significant bump in compensation for Elliott, who had one year left on his previous deal. But the move wasn’t just about money. It was deeply personal.

Elliott took to his Instagram story to share his appreciation following the extension. “Grateful to the Rooney family, Omar Khan and coach Tomlin for bringing me to Pittsburgh and giving me a home,” Elliott said. “Thankful to be extended for two more years to play for the best organization and in front of the best fans in the NFL.”

His message reflected more than just professional satisfaction. It captured an emotional bond he’s formed with the team, the city and especially head coach Mike Tomlin. In a May interview, Elliott expressed how different the Steelers’ environment is compared to his previous NFL stops.
“I’ve been to a lot of places but it’s the only place where I feel like home, so I appreciate them so much for the opportunity,” said Elliott.
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Elliott spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins. Though productive, he struggled to find long-term stability until 2024. Initially signed to a two-year, $6 million deal, Elliott made the most of his first season with the Steelers, appearing in 15 games and finishing second on the team with 108 tackles. He contributed with four tackles behind the line of scrimmage, broke up six passes, recovered three fumbles, forced two more and grabbed one interception.
More impressively, he converted 108 of 111 tackle opportunities, a 97.3% efficiency that set the all-time mark in Next Gen Stats history (minimum 100 opportunities since 2018). It was a statistical leap from earlier seasons and made his extension a logical reward.
Elliott didn’t shy away from crediting his agent team either.
“Also want to thank CJ LaBoy, Quincy Peyton and Wasserman NFL for getting this done,” Elliott said. “They’ve changed my life in the last four months more than any representation has previously, through business and building relationship.”
Beyond gratitude for his representation, Elliott’s words reveal just how much this moment means to him on a personal level. For him, the new contract isn’t just a professional milestone, it’s a sign that he’s found his football home.
“I think I was probably born to be a Steeler,” he told Steelers Now in November. “I love it here. I love the guys in the locker room… a coach that preaches a culture of winning, and a tradition of championship football.”
With elite production, leadership qualities and a bond with Tomlin that extends beyond football, Elliott’s extension solidifies more than a roster spot. It cements a mutual belief between player and franchise.
