Deshaun Watson Trade Rumors Heat Up as Jets Fans Debate Possible Move

The speculation emerged on WFAN’s “Boomer and Gio” show, where Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti debated how fans of the New York Jets might react if the team pursued Watson as a quarterback option.

Giannotti made little effort to hide his doubts, saying, “It’s got to be overwhelmingly negative, right?” He acknowledged Watson’s past talent but questioned whether any fan base, particularly one already frustrated, would welcome him.

Esiason shifted the focus from fans to decision-makers. He framed the issue through a front-office lens, pointing out Watson’s age and motivation. “They’re gonna process it as that he is past all of his crap and that he is in the middle of now wanting to… play as good as he possibly can to try to get another contract,” Esiason said. In that context, Watson is not viewed as a franchise cornerstone but as a potential bridge quarterback for a team needing short-term stability.

While the Jets discussion was hypothetical, Watson’s situation with the Cleveland Browns keeps those scenarios alive. He is entering the final year of his contract with the Browns, and moving on before its expiration would be financially damaging. Browns general manager Andrew Berry publicly reaffirmed the organization’s short-term commitment, praising Watson’s work during rehabilitation and engagement with teammates.

“I’ll say we’re very pleased with how Deshaun went through and attacked his rehab this past year, how he engaged with the team, what he did in the meeting rooms. Very pleased with the progress that he made in that regard,” Berry said. He added that the Browns anticipate Watson being on the 2026 roster, while acknowledging that predicting the future remains difficult.

Outside the Browns, skepticism persists. Mike Sando of The Athletic expressed doubt that Watson’s NFL career extends much further, arguing that teams may not be willing to absorb the negative attention associated with him. Sando questioned whether Watson has shown enough on the field to justify the scrutiny that would follow him into a new market like the Jets.

Performance concerns fuel that doubt. Since arriving at the Browns via a blockbuster 2022 trade, Watson has struggled to regain form. Injuries and suspension have limited his availability, and his results have been uneven when healthy. He missed all of last season recovering from two Achilles surgeries and was never activated despite returning to practice.

Financial realities complicate everything. According to Spotrac, Watson’s 2026 cap hit and dead money figures are massive, reinforcing why his future is discussed more in theoretical terms than actionable plans.

Still, Watson remains defiant. “Credits haven’t rolled.. my story is still being written,” he posted on social media. Whether that next chapter includes a short-term reset with the Jets or ends with the Browns remains unresolved.
