Deion Sanders Reveals the Major Life Lesson He Learned Amid Cancer Scare

Deion Sanders says his cancer battle forced him to rethink everything in life, including his beloved football.

Deion Sanders is speaking more openly about how last year’s cancer battle changed his outlook on life, describing the experience as a turning point that forced him to reassess how he spends his time.

After being diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer in 2025 and undergoing neobladder reconstruction surgery, the Colorado head coach has returned to the sideline, but in recent clips and interviews, he has made clear that his priorities have shifted.

Cancer Scare Pushed Deion Sanders to Focus on Living Life Outside Football

In a recent Instagram video, filmed while he sat alongside his girlfriend Karrueche Tran, Sanders reflected on how the diagnosis and treatment forced him to slow down and pay attention to what he calls God’s message.

“When I went through what I went through last year, with the cancer, it triggered something in me that said … ‘start living,’” Sanders said in the clip. He explained that before the diagnosis, his schedule was dominated by coaching, recruiting, and administrative responsibilities, with little room left for rest or personal time.

Sanders went on to describe a sense of urgency to enjoy what he has built. “Now it’s time for me to live, start enjoying the fruits of [my] labor,” he shared, acknowledging that for much of his coaching career, he had not given himself permission to step back and appreciate the results of his work.

The 58‑year‑old coach admitted that his previous routine left little space for that kind of balance. “I really don’t get to enjoy anything,” Coach Prime added. “I gotta start enjoying life, that’s what God is whispering to me.”

In 2025, Sanders underwent neobladder reconstruction to treat his bladder cancer, a complex operation in which surgeons removed his diseased bladder and built a new one from a section of his small intestine.

He has since acknowledged that adapting to the new organ has not been easy, joking at a press conference that he now “depends on the Depends” at night and urging others facing similar procedures not to feel ashamed about incontinence or other side effects.

Specialists involved in his care have highlighted how physically demanding the surgeries and recoveries were, from the reconstruction itself to further procedures related to blood clots.

Sanders has said that those experiences, combined with the amputation of toes and part of his lower leg in earlier operations, contributed to a broader realization that he could not treat his health as secondary to football indefinitely.

Tran, 37, has reinforced that message in their shared videos, saying she believes she was brought into his life “to help him live life and experience new things … to travel and to do different things.”

Sanders has agreed that he previously kept his focus almost exclusively on his program and his players, and that his partner and children have urged him to make room for experiences outside the daily grind of coaching.

Sanders’ message now extends to fans and viewers. In public comments about his diagnosis, he has urged people, particularly men in his age group, to keep up with regular screenings and not ignore warning signs. He has stressed that his tumor was discovered during routine medical checks and suggested that the outcome might have been very different had he not gone in for those appointments.
