Deion Sanders was one of the greatest NFL players in history before transitioning to coaching and turning around Jackson State and Colorado’s fortunes in college football. Four-time Pro Bowler QB Michael Vick has signed up for a similar journey with Norfolk State, and like Sanders’, his journey will be documented through a docuseries that is launched by Hall of Famer Michael Strahan’s SMAC Entertainment and BET Media Group.
SMAC Entertainment and Bet Media Group To Document Michael Vick’s Coaching Journey
The unanimous decision by the Norfolk State board of advisors saw Vick become the 19th head coach of the football program in December last year. Vick began his playing career in college with Virginia Tech and was selected by Atlanta as the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. After retiring from the league, he became an analyst for Fox Sports, and while he has never been a coach, it was Sanders who pushed him to say yes to the job.
Now, the former QB’s coaching journey will be documented like Sanders ‘Coach Prime, which was also co-produced by Strahan’s SMAC. Alongside the Hall of Famer, Constance Schwartz-Morini, and Fred Anthony Smith of SMAC Entertainment will be the executive producers on the project, while Tiffany E. Williams and Angela Aguilera will serve as executive producers for BET Media Group.
“We are excited to partner with BET to share the next chapter of our football journey and our lives, as we return home where it all started for us.” Michael and Kijafa Vick said.
Vick grew up in Newport News, Virginia, and attended Warwick High School. Soon, his exploits on the field got him into headlines and Virginia Tech’s plans. Now, after an impressive 13-year NFL career, Vick returns to his home state and is committed to making an impact at Norfolk State.
“I know first-hand the power that HBCUs have on a community and the opportunity they give to so many student-athletes,” Strahan said. “Michael Vick’s commitment to impacting these young men’s lives and passing along the gifts that football provided him is so inspiring. I’m excited for fans to join him on his journey with Norfolk State University.”
The series will spotlight Vick’s evolution from a generational quarterback to a transformational leader, giving fans an unfiltered look into his transition to coaching and his bond with family, among other things. The series is part of BET’s ongoing #HBweCU initiative, which is focused on amplifying the power and pride of the Black experience, and there’s no better way to do it than through Vick.
