Deion Burks’s NFL Draft Potential

Deion Burks first broke onto the scene at Purdue as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, when he accounted for 47 catches, 629 yards, and seven touchdowns in 12 games. He leveraged that strong season into a transfer opportunity at Oklahoma. His first year with the Sooners was subpar, but heavily impacted by QB instability and injuries. Now fully healthy and accompanied by John Mateer, Burks has found his stride again. He’s on pace for career-best yardage and has a chance to help Oklahoma compete down the stretch in the SEC.

At 5’9 1/2″ and 182 pounds, with sub-30″ arms, Burks is never going to win over evaluators with his size or play strength. But as a slot WR or movement-Z, he holds merit with his profile. At that size, WRs can scarcely have athletic deficiencies — and luckily for Burks, he’s not in short supply there. He’s an energetic mover with blistering speed and explosiveness, and according to Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks” list, Burks also has size-defying strength; he can squat 540 pounds and generate almost four times his body weight in force on his vertical jump.

A powerful, wiry accelerator in spite of his below-average size, Burks excels as a zone-beater. While he has the twitch and foot speed to separate in man, his most prevalent proficiency is his ability to recognize coverage voids and accelerate into space to capitalize. He’s adept at finding soft spots in zone and making himself available with speed and curvilinear acceleration, and he has the sideline awareness, tracking, and body control to convert.

Burks’ 74.5 PFSN CFB WRi score is only average, and none of his numbers jump off the page. But with a promising athletic and separation profile, good RAC efficiency, and a low drop rate, there’s a sense that Burks could be a more productive pro than college player.

CFB Week 9 Update

Burks caught just four passes for 32 yards in Oklahoma’s loss to Ole Miss in Week 9. Much of Burks’ lack of production can be traced back to the man under center; John Mateer was not good in Week 9, and his inaccuracy and inconsistent pocket habits doomed much of the Sooners’ pass-game hopes before they even began to blossom. That said, Burks’ smaller frame can impact his ability to become available through press, and he couldn’t do much outside of schemed touches and quick-game conversions. He’ll be looking for a bounce-back against Tennessee, as Mateer will have to up the ante to keep up with the Volunteers.

CFB Week 10 Update

It was another fairly non-descript week for Burks, who caught just six passes for 45 yards against Tennessee. The Sooners leaned much more on their running game and defense to come out on top over the Volunteers, and while Burks earned a few select RAC opportunities, his reception profile was limited to short-range opportunities.

On those opportunities, Burks was reasonably efficient, but his uncertain projection against press, as well as the offense’s own structural limitations in the pass game, prevented him from expanding beyond that. Evaluators will likely need to parse between what Burks has been asked to do, and what he can do.

CFB Week 11 Update

Oklahoma was on a bye in Week 11. They’ll return to action in Week 12 versus the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Where Is Burks Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?

Burks currently holds the No. 121 overall rank among prospects, reflecting his standing among mid-round prospects. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 127.5 as of November 11 reflects that he is typically being selected in the middle rounds.

The gap between his rank and ADP indicates that while he’s highly regarded on our board, draft simulators are seeing him slide slightly, possibly due to team needs or positional value considerations.

Users controlling the Atlanta Falcons have been the team that selected Burks the most frequently over the past week, accounting for 0.8% of their picks across all seven rounds.
