Deebo Samuel Sr. Floated as Option for Falcons After Darnell Mooney’s Move to Giants

Deebo Samuel Sr. signing with the Atlanta Falcons could give newly added QB Tua Tagovailoa the perfect YAC weapon on a value deal.

With a new head coach and a reshaped quarterback room, the Atlanta Falcons are retooling their offense. The departure of wide receiver Darnell Mooney leaves another opening in a unit still looking to establish consistency behind Drake London.

With free agency slowing, the focus has shifted to experienced playmakers who remain available. Deebo Samuel Sr. has emerged as a potential option who could fit the direction Atlanta appears to be heading.

Why Deebo Samuel Sr. Fits the Atlanta Falcons’ Offensive Direction

Atlanta’s offseason points to a clear shift toward building an offense that can create production after the catch. The addition of Tua Tagovailoa introduces a quarterback who thrives on quick decisions and short-area accuracy rather than pushing the ball downfield. His 7.2 average depth of target ranked among the lowest in the league, underscoring the importance of receivers who can generate yards with the ball in their hands.

PFSN’s Austin Swaim outlined the situation.

“The Atlanta Falcons have plenty of defensive needs and few picks to address them. A wide receiver seems to be an unaffordable luxury in April’s draft. While that’s likely the reason that Atlanta brought in former first-round pick Jahan Dotson on a value contract, Dotson has just 121 receptions in four seasons.

“Pushing him into an unquestioned No. 2 role behind Drake London might be too much to ask. Especially if the recently signed Tua Tagovailoa wins the Falcons’ starting job, they’ll need playmakers who can turn short passes into home runs. Tagovailoa’s average depth of target (7.2) was among the lowest in the league among quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks. That’s Samuel’s specialty, so getting him on a value contract really loads up an offense that already has London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts.”

That context highlights why Samuel fits what Atlanta is building. Rather than replacing Mooney’s downfield speed, the Falcons could pivot toward a more physical and versatile approach, using Samuel across multiple alignments and even in the run game.

Atlanta did bring in Jahan Dotson on a value deal, but his production has been inconsistent, totaling 121 receptions across four seasons. Relying on him as a clear No. 2 option could be a stretch. Adding Samuel would give the Falcons a more proven option while also taking pressure off the rest of the receiving group.

In an offense that already features London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts, Samuel would not need to be the focal point. Instead, he could serve as a complementary weapon, creating mismatches and adding flexibility to the scheme.

How Deebo Samuel Sr.’s Production Brings Value in Free Agency

Samuel remains available after a solid 2025 season in which he recorded 72 receptions, 802 scrimmage yards, and 6 total touchdowns. While those numbers do not match the peak production earlier in his career, they still reflect a player capable of contributing in multiple ways.

Atlanta’s current roster construction suggests it may not prioritize wide receiver early in the draft, given defensive needs and limited draft capital. That makes free agency a more realistic avenue for adding impact players at the position.

The Falcons do not need to replicate what Mooney did. They need to find production in a different way, and Samuel offers a path to do that.
