Trying to take a step further from their NFC Championship Game finish last season, the Washington Commanders were very aggressive in the offseason. Trying to fill out the roster around their superstar quarterback, Jayden Daniels, they made some key signings and blockbuster trades. However, no move held as much star power and name value as the trade to acquire Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers.
Since joining the roster, Samuel has had an impressive resurgence, finding his groove both as a returner and a wide receiver. Through four games, his contributions have been invaluable for Washington to go 2-2, despite Daniels missing two games. But with Daniels coming back in Week 5, will fans get to witness both players on the field at the same time once again?
Will Deebo Samuel Play Against the Chargers?
A second-round pick in 2019, Samuel was wholly unique for his ability to act as a wide receiver and running back on designated sets. Finding his footing immediately with the 49ers, he earned a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection.
Unfortunately, his production took a dip in 2024, prompting San Francisco, which was getting ready to offer Brock Purdy his extension, to trade him to the Commanders. Since arriving in Washington, his numbers have taken a significant step up.
Through four games, he has 204 receiving yards and two touchdowns to his credit, alongside 46 rushing yards and a touchdown. However, what truly sets him apart is the 221 yards he’s already added as a kick returner.
After a solid outing against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, despite the Commanders’ loss, it was a shock to see him show up on the injury report with a heel injury. After he did not practice till Wednesday, the worry started to pile on.
However, he was later seen on the field on Thursday, with fan optimism starting to grow about his availability for Sunday. Then, Adam Schefter took to X to confirm the news, ensuring the team would have a few of its stars back on the field against LA.
“WR Deebo Samuel, who missed the past two days of practice due to a heel injury, is off the injury report and good to go Sunday.” Despite the injury concerns that plagued him this week, head coach Dan Quinn is going to have to rely on him in a major way.
Both Noah Brown and Terry McLaurin have been ruled out for the game, leaving the receiving core feeling exceptionally empty for Washington. Against a team that has been elite against the passing game so far this season, Samuel will have to play a major role to ensure his team stays above .500.
