Darius Slay Jr. got his wish of being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers but was quickly forced to rethink his NFL future.
The Buffalo Bills claimed Slay off of waivers, but the six-time Pro Bowler decided he is not interested in playing there. This led to questions about if Slay would prefer to reunite with the Detroit Lions or Philadelphia Eagles, or if he’s ready to retire.
Darius Slay Jr. Reveals if He’d Play for Eagles
Late Thursday night, Slay made an appearance on the Speakeasy podcast hosted by former Eagles linebacker and analyst Emmanuel Acho. Acho wasted no time asking if Slay holds an interest in returning to Philadelphia if the opportunity arises.
“Oh man, you know, we don’t know, man. We’ll see, though. We will see,” Slay said. “I don’t know, man. I’m just telling you the fact, though. Like I said, man, I had a real big impact with my kid. Man, like I said, me and my oldest son, we’ve been going through the wars together since peewee.”
Slay continued, “This is his senior year of football. He’s doing basketball. Then my middle one, I just left his game, and it just felt good to be there, so it would have been a hard time to think about it. Philly is my second home, but when I got home the other day, I was like, ‘Shoot, boy, this feels too good to be at the crib.'”
In other words, Slay seems to be against the idea of moving his kids elsewhere in their current stages of life. However, Pittsburgh to Philadelphia is a lot less significant of a change compared to Buffalo.
Slay spent five years in Philadelphia, where he recorded nine interceptions and was a phenomenal player for the defense.
Although the Super Bowl champion is no longer the player he once was, he can still contribute on a winning team. He is the No. 83-ranked cornerback in the league, per PFSN’s metrics, with a CB impact score of 69.8.
This statement suggests Slay is leaning toward retirement from the NFL, but only time will tell if he ends up back in Philadelphia.
