Cowboys Rookie Tyler Booker Breaks Silence on Position Switch After Being Drafted As Guard Zack Martin’s Heir

Dallas Cowboys rookie offensive lineman Tyler Booker has a long road ahead, replacing a legend. Find out what he said about the task at hand.

Tyler Booker knew this day would come. The Dallas Cowboys rookie offensive lineman has spent months preparing to fill one of the biggest shoes in franchise history. Now, with Zack Martin’s retirement creating a massive void on the offensive line, Booker is ready to step up and prove he belongs.

Replacing a legend is never easy in sports. While a newcomer might excel, escaping that shadow of greatness proves rough sledding. Meanwhile, if the replacement struggles, you can expect an overreaction from fans and media alike, lambasting the player and pining for the star to return.

How Is Tyler Booker Handling the Pressure of Replacing Franchise Cornerstone Guard Zack Martin?

After 11 years anchoring the Cowboys’ offensive line, Zack Martin retired during the offseason. With the Hall of Fame nothing but a certainty, the seven-time All-Pro called it a career on February 20.

Dallas spent the 12th pick of this year’s draft on the former Alabama standout, knowing Martin’s retirement would leave a cavernous hole in a position of need.

For the last decade or so, Dallas boasted one of the better offensive lines in the game. They cleared running lanes and provided protection for two Pro Bowl quarterbacks and running backs, including Tony Romo, Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, and Tony Pollard.

Now, it’s Booker’s time to shine. Not only will he replace Martin, but the rookie must also adjust to playing right guard instead of his college position. He spoke to CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell regarding the shift and how he’s handling the transition.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Booker said Thursday. “You have to think a little bit more, but at the same time, it’s a technique that you’re a lot more cognizant of what you’re doing with your body.”

He continued, “It’s not too hard because my freshman year at ‘Bama, I would get two drives at left guard and two drives at right guard. Shout out to Coach [Nick] Saban and [offensive line coach] Coach [Eric] Wolford for getting me ready for the NFL.”

What Makes the Position Switch So Challenging for Booker?

To many fans, the shift from left guard to right guard might not seem difficult. However, the footwork completely flips when moving to the opposite side of the line.

For example, opening holes inside now requires using a different dominant foot. On the left side, your right foot and side seal off the defender. In contrast, on the other side, the left foot acts as the doorknob that slams the door.

Beyond the footwork changes, Booker’s hands must also switch roles. His left hand now becomes his inside hand, which needs to serve as the stronger one when engaging defenders.

The transition is similar to a boxer switching from an orthodox stance (left hand forward, right hand back) to a southpaw stance (left hand back, right hand forward). While that technique also depends on the dominant hand, the successful move will pay immediate dividends for Dallas.

Can Anyone Truly Replace Zack Martin’s Legacy?

Martin left behind a legacy that will be tough to match. The veteran guard accumulated just 21 accepted penalties during his entire career, including just one during his final season. The nine-time All-Pro logged 10,562 snaps over his career. Through coaching changes and teammates leaving, he remained the constant on Dallas’s offensive line.

Booker will take over the spot that Martin held for more than a decade. The question remains whether he can ever truly replace what Martin brought to the Cowboys.

While the rookie has the physical tools and college experience to succeed, filling the shoes of a future Hall of Famer represents one of the biggest challenges any young player can face.

The pressure is real, but Booker seems ready for the challenge. His experience at Alabama, where he played both guard positions, has prepared him for this moment. Now it’s time to see if he can live up to the expectations that come with being Martin’s heir.
