Could the Cowboys Potentially Sign This Unexpected Running Back in Free Agency?

Tony Pollard is headed to Tennessee to join the Titans, and, with that move, it ensures the Dallas Cowboys‘ running back room will assuredly look different than it did in 2023. However, could they replace Pollard with a familiar face?

With Dallas in the mix for a new RB, word around the team is that old friend Ezekiel Elliott may be in the mix once again. Could the Cowboys reach back into their past to fill their current running back hole? At least one Cowboys writer thinks it’s possible. We examine the possible reunion between Elliott and the team that drafted him.

Could Ezekiel Elliott Return to Dallas?

There have been rumblings connecting the Cowboys to various available free agents around the NFL with nothing materializing as of yet. With big names like Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley agreeing to terms with new teams, the prospective pool of available running backs is diminishing by the hour.

However, according to Patrik Walker of the Cowboys’ team site, the idea of adding Elliott to Dallas shouldn’t be brushed off.

“(AJ) Dillon is in play, I believe, but I’ll also repeat what I said on
@CowboysBreak: I wouldn’t rule out a possible reunion with Ezekiel Elliott (and then also drafting an RB to tandem). His relationship with the #Cowboys is still positive and the dialogue has remained open.”

While the answer on social media was prompted by the Cowboys’ reported interest in former Green Bay Packers RB AJ Dillon, Walker quickly reminds everyone that despite Elliott and the team parting ways ahead of the 2023 season, there is still mutual respect between the two parties.

Elliott, following his release from the Cowboys, played for the New England Patriots in 2023. Yet, despite his divorce from his former team, the relationship between the long-time Dallas running back and the organization is still positive.

Elliott and Cowboys QB Dak Prescott are best friends who are still very close to this day, even with the relationship going as far as Elliott being a guest of Prescott’s in his private suite for the NFC Wild Card game last season.

Elliott is fresh off of a year where he finished with 184 carries, 642 rushing yards, and three rushing touchdowns with the Patriots in a running back by committee role alongside Rhamondre Stevenson.

While it looks like the Cowboys may be attacking the position via the draft, they may look to add a former ally back into the fold to solve their RB problems in 2024.
