For a whole generation of NFL viewers, NBC Sports’ Cris Collinsworth has been in the booth for the network’s “Sunday Night Football” broadcasts. He’s been working this season alongside veteran play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico, with Melissa Stark on the sidelines with updates.
What a lot of NFL viewers might not know, though, is that Collinsworth had quite an NFL career himself. Collinsworth was a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, even playing in two Super Bowls himself. But his attention on Sunday will be on Super Bowl 60.
Is NBC Sports’ NFL Broadcaster Cris Collinsworth Older Than Other Commentators?
While looking at Collinsworth’s career, some people might want to know just how old he is, after all. Well, Collinsworth is 67 years old and was born on January 27, 1959. Compared to other NFL commentators, Collinsworth is one of the oldest to be behind the mic.
During Collinsworth’s first 13 seasons on “Sunday Night Football,” he worked alongside Al Michaels, who now calls NFL games alongside ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit for Amazon Prime Video.
Before deep diving into Collinsworth’s award-winning broadcasting career, he spent eight years with the Bengals. In 107 NFL games, Collinsworth caught 417 passes for 6,698 yards and 36 touchdown receptions. Collinsworth played for the Bengals in Super Bowl 16 and 23, and he also holds down first place for the Bengals’ all-time career receptions list.
After Collinsworth wrapped up his NFL career, he became a reporter for HBO’s legendary “Inside the NFL” program in 1989. Then, in 1990, Collinsworth joined the show’s studio cast.
Collinsworth earned a place in the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023 in August 2023 for his work in the sports TV and media industry. In May 2022, Collinsworth won his 17th Sports Emmy Award, and his ninth for Outstanding Event Analyst.
In fact, Collinsworth has won seven of those Outstanding Event Analyst awards since joining “Sunday Night Football” in 2009. Then, in May 2025, Collinsworth earned another Sports Emmy Award as part of NBC Sports’ NFL playoff coverage.
Collinsworth also worked for Fox Sports. In 2002, he was part of the “NFL on Fox” broadcast booth with play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst and former NFL quarterback Troy Aikman. Buck and Aikman, though, are now in the booth for ESPN/ABC’s “Monday Night Football” telecasts.
Among NFL commentators, Aikman is 59 years old. Fox Sports’ Daryl Johnston is also 59. CBS Sports NFL commentator Trent Green, who works alongside Kevin Harlan calling NFL games, is 55 years old.
Even with all his NFL work, Collinsworth has also had roles at four Olympics for NBC.
But Collinsworth will have his attention on the field alongside Tirico for Super Bowl 60. The New England Patriots will face the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
