When a kicker is involved in drama, that usually means there is a late-minute, potentially game-winning moment on the line. However, when it comes to Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, there has been quite a bit of intrigue indeed.
Stephen Jones, Cowboys Expect Brandon Aubrey to Stay Despite $10M Rumors
John Breech of CBS Sports wrote on Wednesday that Aubrey was seeking a contract worth $10 million per year, which would be a substantial rise from the current highest-paid kicker in the league, Harrison Butker ($6.4 million).
“The Cowboys are trying to get a long-term deal done with their kicker and they’re even willing to make him the highest-paid player ever at his position, but a deal hasn’t gotten done because of Aubrey’s asking price. The 30-year-old reportedly wants to be paid somewhere close to $10 million per year.”
He continues to explain how Aubrey’s contract expectation isn’t completely logical, considering that Dallas holds most of the cards.
Breech went on to write that if Dallas puts a 2nd-round tender on Aubrey, it could be followed by two consecutive franchise tags: “If you’re the Cowboys, there’s no reason to meet his $10 million asking price because you essentially control him over the next three years…”
Despite the fact that Dallas could simply wait this out and still be on the winning end of the situation, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said during the 2026 NFL Combine on Friday that a deal could be worked out between Aubrey and Dallas much sooner, and people think.
Brandon Loree, staff writer for “Blogging The Boys”, posted on Friday that Jones seemed to have quite the positive outlook regarding the contract talks with the star kicker.
“…I believe we can get a deal done with Brandon…we’ll continue to roll up our sleeves and hopefully maybe who knows maybe we can get this thing done in the next week to 10 days,” Jones told Jonathan Jones from NFL on CBS.

Aubrey has proven not only that he is reliable in big moments, but also that he has one of the strongest legs in the NFL. Being able to close out games from further out is a luxury that the Cowboys do not want to part with, and as Breech wrote, they have no reason to let him go anywhere.
Will this turn into another offseason contract battle like the Micah Parsons situation, or is Jones right, and will the Cowboys close this without any bad press or further issues?
Aubrey knows his worth, but how far will he push with Dallas having so much leverage? Expect to see Aubrey kicking for the Cowboys in 2026, but whether he is happy about it remains to be seen.
