As training camp intensifies and preseason action looms, one of the most hotly contested battles at Dallas Cowboys camp is taking place in the backfield, which includes Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Jaydon Blue. With the release of the team’s first unofficial depth chart ahead of preseason Game 1, fans now have a clearer, though not final, glimpse into how the running back rotation could shake out.
While veteran Williams holds the top spot as RB1, all eyes are also on rookie Blue, who is currently listed as the team’s No. 3 running back.
A Three-Headed Backfield in Dallas
The Cowboys appear to be heading into the 2025 regular season with a committee approach at running back. Veterans Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams bring experience and explosiveness to the group, but rookie Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick out of Texas, is turning heads at training camp and quickly climbing the depth chart.
Williams, who booked the 2024 season with 139 carries for 513 yards (3.69 YPC) and four touchdowns, is currently the projected starter. He’s been heavily featured in 11-on-11 drills and appears poised to handle early-down duties. However, his injury history, combined with that of Sanders, has left the door open for a younger back like Blue to stake his claim.
Jaydon Blue: Not Just a Developmental Prospect
Though Blue is officially RB3 for now, the term “unofficial” carries weight. In the NFL, especially during preseason, depth charts often reflect short-term status rather than long-term projection.

Coaches frequently use these listings as motivational tools or placeholders. Blue, who was largely behind veterans during OTAs and minicamp, has rapidly made up ground at training camp. His burst, vision, and pass-catching ability have impressed coaches and teammates alike.
For now, Dallas appears content with easing Blue into NFL action. The staff has emphasized the importance of him “learning what it means to be an NFL player” before shouldering a bigger load. But with Sanders and Williams both battling durability issues in recent years, it could only be a matter of time before Blue is asked to do more than rotate in.
If Blue continues to build momentum through the preseason, his position on the depth chart could rise quickly. The Cowboys open their regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles, and while Williams is expected to get the official start, don’t be surprised if Blue sees significant action, especially on passing downs or in space.
Javonte Williams Still Leads, for Now
Despite the rookie buzz, Williams remains the favorite to start Week 1. After signing with Dallas in free agency, the former Broncos back brings both experience and explosiveness when healthy. In 2024, Williams posted:
- 139 carries
- 513 rushing yards
- 3.69 yards per carry
- 4 touchdowns
While those aren’t elite numbers, Williams has looked reinvigorated in camp, often being featured creatively in 11-on-11 team drills.
