Why Was Cowboys vs. Eagles Suspended?

Due to bad weather and lightning surrounding the area near Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the season opener for the 2025 season was delayed until further notice.

It brings back memories of last year’s Hall of Fame Game, which was called early due to bad weather. But, on this stage, it is a rather shocking development as regular-season games are typically not delayed, particularly ones as important as the season opener.

However, fans of the league might have to wait a while before things return to normal. Early estimates suggest that it could be nearly an hour before gameplay resumes. An official word came in the form of Mike Tirico from the announcer’s team.

Adam Schefter covered the report on X, stating, “Game could resume about 11:30, per NBC’s @miketirico.” With players getting about 15 minutes of time to get loose on the field, expect them back on the gridiron at around 11:15.

The Story of Cowboys-Eagles So Far

So far, the game has been every bit as exciting as its billing as the season opener. An offensive showcase from both sides, the Eagles and the Cowboys combined to score on their first seven possessions, leading to a score of 24-20.

However, Philadelphia got a huge surge of momentum right before the break in the action. After recording a 49-yard rush, Miles Sanders made a costly mistake as he fumbled the ball in the red zone, which sophomore Quinyon Mitchell recovered.

It was the first turnover of the game, which also marked the first possession to end without a score. However, the delay might prove to be useful for the Cowboys as they can recover from the mistake and try to rebound from the turnover.

The biggest story, though, apart from the delay in the action, has to be the situation involving last year’s All-Pro selection, Jalen Carter. Arguably the best player on the Eagles’ defense, Carter did not register a single snap in the game.

Six seconds into the contest, he was ejected from the night’s proceedings after a disgusting display as he spat on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. The referee crew, led by Shawn Smith, caught him in the act, leading to an immediate ejection.

His impact was immediately felt as Dallas recorded a touchdown on each of its first two possessions, and a field goal in the next two. With the ball in their hands and the chance to capitalize on a four-point lead, it should be interesting to see how the Eagles take care of business the rest of the way.
