The Micah Parsons trade, even after his request, felt like a wild conclusion to the entire saga that had played out over the offseason. Thanks to some incendiary comments from Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, the relationship between the superstar defender and the organization had considerably soured. In the end, an enticing offer from the Green Bay Packers is all it took for Jones to ship Parsons.
But, his absence is going to leave a significant hole in the defense. Moreover, his standing as a team captain in the locker room might severely impact the rest of the players on the roster as well. Their quarterback and another team leader, Dak Prescott, dealt with a similarly drawn-out negotiation last offseason. Finally, he revealed his personal feelings on the matter involving the four-time Pro Bowler.
Dak Prescott Reveals Key Reason for Micah Parsons Trade
Last offseason, Prescott was aiming for a contract extension from the Cowboys. However, the entire summer passed without a deal being made official. It wasn’t until the first game of the regular season was in the books that the two sides agreed on a contract.
It made him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history with an average annual value of more than $60 million spread over four years. But, in Parsons’ case, the discussions were far more instigated.
Firstly, Jones took shots at his production and availability, despite the star rusher missing four total games in his first four seasons in the league, all while tallying 12 or more sacks in each year of his career.
Then, his refusal to negotiate with Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, turned the conversation into ugly territory. Speaking to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Prescott revealed the conversation’s turn as the final straw for the deal.
As Machota broke it down on X, “I definitely didn’t think he was going to get traded. But just with the way their negotiations went down, obviously to some extent, hell, y’all were asking me questions, it seemed like it got personal on their ends, so that’s why I wasn’t surprised.”
Parsons was critical to the former Offensive Rookie of the Year’s career. After an electric first season, Prescott could not lead Dallas to more than 10 wins over the next four years. However, that distinction changed immediately upon the three-time All-Pro’s arrival.

From 2021-2023, the Cowboys won 12 games each season, despite a shoddy playoff record. As a result, Prescott revealed that he didn’t have any antagonistic feelings towards his former teammate. Moreover, the two even exchanged words after the trade.
“I wished him good luck.” A little over a month after the trade was first made official, the two sides will square off in Week 4 of the 2025 NFL season in what is sure to be one of the most anticipated matchups on the entire calendar.
