Controversy Erupts As NFL Fans Argue Ravens Actually Missed 41-Yard FG vs. Lions

Ravens kicker Tyler Loop attempted a 41-yard field goal against the Lions, and NFL fans believe he missed it despite the kick being declared good.

As expected, the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions are locked in an instant class on Monday Night Football in Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season.

After entering halftime tied 14-14, the Lions jumped out to a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Ravens had to settle for a field goal while driving down the field in an attempt to tie the game, and Tyler Loop converted the 41-yard kick to make it a four-point game.

Except, Loop may have actually missed the field goal, as many NFL fans argued on social media shortly after the kick was ruled good.

Ravens kicker Tyler Loop makes controversial Field Goal Against Lions on MNF

Loop, who replaced longtime kicking stalwart Justin Tucker after an offseason filled with controversy for the legendary kicker, has been excellent to begin his NFL career, nailing all four field goal attempts and nine of his 10 extra-point attempts heading into Monday’s game.

He hit all three of his extra points to begin the contest with the Lions, but it was on his first field goal attempt that controversy struck. The kick was ruled good, though most fans seem to disagree.

Even the comments on the Ravens’ post about the made field goal seem to disagree with the referees’ ruling. The ESPN broadcast explained that as long as the ball crosses the outside edge of the post, the kick should be deemed good, though most NFL fans weren’t buying it.

The NFL rulebook states: “The entire ball must pass through the vertical plane of the goal, which is the area above the crossbar and between the uprights or, if above the uprights, between their outside edges.”

The top of the upright in the NFL is 45 feet above the playing field. The dimensions of an NFL goalpost are a crossbar 10 feet off the ground and two 35-foot-tall uprights that are 18 feet and six inches apart and topped with orange streamers, which are always helpful when watching a game with some wind.

The kick put the Ravens behind 24-28, though the Lions responded with a field goal of their own to restore their seven-point lead.

The controversial ruling would end up not mattering too much, as the Lions went on to win the game by a final score of 38-30.
