NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Sends Clear Message Addressing Lack of Black HCs, GMs Across League

NFL global growth is booming, but coaching diversity lags. Roger Goodell explains what’s next and why results haven’t changed.

The NFL has evolved as a sport since the roaring ’20s.

From the first game between the Dayton Triangles and Columbus Panhandlers in 1920 to the league’s first televised matchup between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Eagles in 1939, significant milestones in the sport’s history have carried forward its legacy and made it all-inclusive, as it is today.

And in the recent press conference during Super Bowl week, commissioner Roger Goodell addressed inclusivity in the sport and diversity across various positions across the league.

Roger Goodell Addresses Lack of Diversity in the NFL

The main focus during Commissioner Goodell’s tenure has been the sport’s global expansion. Hence, he was nicknamed the Growth Driver, like Pete Rozelle was deemed The Architect. Since taking up the position in 2006, Goodell’s decisions have led to massive revenue increases.

While there have been many conversations in the past about the changes brought by the NFL, one concern has been diversity in the sport at the coaching and managerial levels.

Speaking to the media on Monday during the Super Bowl week, Goodell discussed various factors in hiring, as well as the gradual expansion of the Rooney Rule over the years. During the press conference, a reporter posed a glaring question to Goodell: With the ratio at 1 of 9 for coaches of color, how does the NFL commissioner plan to address this and improve the numbers?

Goodell replied, “It is something we need to continue to make progress. And I believe that diversity is good for us. I think we have become a more diverse league across every platform, including coaching. But we still have more work to do. There’s got to be more steps.”

He then went on to explain what they were doing to ensure diversity and the challenges they faced along the way. “We are reevaluating everything we are doing, including our accelerated program and including every aspect of our policy and our programs,” emphasizing how close attention to details in the execution of all the new policies could improve this situation. However, there are roadblocks.

He feels that efficient evaluation could provide solutions in the future.

Goodell added, “To me, the challenges [are] of today and tomorrow, rather than yesterday. We need to be looking at that and say, ‘Okay, why did we have the results this year?’ ‘What is it that we could be doing for training or education?'”

It will not just be the sports authorities and officials who will bring in the changes.

Goodell concluded, emphasizing, “That goes not just for candidates but also for the clubs. How we can try to continue to increase the opportunities and the outcomes ultimately?”

Effective questioning and mapping progress could help the league eliminate this problem.
