The Washington Commanders face a challenging situation with disgruntled receiver Terry McLaurin as contract negotiations remain stalled. With the regular season approaching, one analyst believes he has the solution to address the standoff.
McLaurin and the Commanders haven’t made any reported progress on the new deal he wants. With the regular season approaching, Dan Quinn and other franchise decision-makers might not want that cloud hanging over Jayden Daniels’ head as the young quarterback enters his second campaign.
Analyst Considers Possible Trade for Washington Commanders to Address Terry McLaurin Situation
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox proposes a solution that could benefit all parties involved. On Tuesday, he suggested Washington should trade for San Francisco 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings, who enjoyed a breakout campaign last season as his team was missing Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey for significant stretches.
Knox drew up a swap that would send a 2027 third-round draft pick and receiver Noah Brown to the Bay Area in order to get Jennings to the nation’s capital. This move would provide another reliable target for Daniels, who hopes to have as successful a second year as he did as a newcomer when he captured Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
“Though the trade buzz surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings has died down some, it hasn’t completely dissipated,” Knox wrote. “Bleacher Reports’ Alex Kay examined four logical landing spots for Jennings after his request became public. The Washington Commanders weren’t listed, possibly because they already traded for one 49ers receiver this offseason.”
Jennings told the 49ers midway through last month that he wanted a new contract or to be traded. He racked up 975 receiving yards and six touchdown grabs last season. Throughout his four seasons as a pro, Jennings has posted 155 catches for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns, showing consistent production when given opportunities.
What Makes This Trade Proposal Logical for Washington?
Knox connected some important dots between Jennings and Washington, pointing out the Commanders’ general manager, Adam Peters, came from the 49ers’ front office. This existing relationship could facilitate negotiations between the two organizations. Washington also acquired Deebo Samuel from San Francisco earlier this offseason, establishing a recent trade partnership.
“Hypothetically, a McLaurin-for-Jennings swap could work, but that feels unlikely, given McLaurin’s desire for a new contract,” Knox said. “San Francisco just paid Brandon Aiyuk last offseason and got out from under Samuel’s contract earlier this year.”
“However, the Commanders could include Noah Brown, who racked up 453 yards in 11 games in 2023-24 before suffering a lacerated kidney. He’s entering a contract year but would help San Francisco replace Jennings.”
Additionally, Knox suggested in the same piece that the Commanders should ship McLaurin to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a second-round pick in next year’s draft and speedy wideout Calvin Austin III, showing multiple potential paths forward for Washington’s front office to consider.
