A very public dispute with the San Francisco 49ers may end up hurting Brandon Aiyuk in more ways than one. Their spat has played out over multiple seasons, beginning with an extended contract negotiation that landed him his current four-year, $120 million deal.
Unfortunately, after getting injured seven games into the 2024 season, the veteran wide receiver has essentially been AWOL from the franchise. After being placed on the left squad list, Aiyuk has taken shots at everyone from Kyle Shanahan to John Lynch to his former agent on social media, but the two sides remain at an impasse.

Aiyuk has made his desire to sign with the Washington Commanders apparent. But so far, there has been no movement on that front, given his obligations to the 49ers, who still have him under contract.
With training camp getting underway, Commanders general manager Adam Peters was asked about the Aiyuk situation, without his name coming up even once in the conversation.
The reporter in question asked Peters about the influence a person’s social media activity has on their evaluation. The clear indication towards Aiyuk was hard to miss, drawing a laugh from the veteran executive and head coach Dan Quinn.
“We look at everything, and we want to make sure it’s the right player to be in our locker room and our bloodstream and our culture. We look at that stuff, I mean, it’s not always the first thing we look at,” Peters said.
That assessment left little room for Aiyuk joining the Commanders this year. But the next part of Peters’ answer may leave the door a tiny bit open. Rather than social media, though, he detailed the main focus for the organization.

“Obviously, you’re looking at the tape. Then you talk to the teams the players have been on, how they were in the locker room, the players that have played with them, and so on and so forth, to make those decisions. But it’s not usually a huge part. Usually,” he added with a laugh.
It remains to be seen how the Aiyuk saga will finally conclude. But a reunion with the 49ers is all but out of the window. Unfortunately, given his antics throughout this summer, his preferred choice of the Commanders also might be a lost cause.
But with his relationship with quarterback Jayden Daniels (even if it’s been a bit rocky as of late) and the obvious need Washington has for quality receivers, Aiyuk would fill a major gap for them. Ultimately, it might come down to how much the organization is willing to overlook to bring him in.
