The Indianapolis Colts’ strong start to the 2025 season just hit a significant setback, and it comes from an unexpected place. What began as a routine special teams play ended in a worst-case scenario, and now the team’s most reliable scorer is facing an uncertain future.
Colts Face Major Challenge After Shrader’s Season-Ending Blow
Colts kicker Spencer Shrader will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after suffering a serious leg injury during Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Shrader “suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday vs. the Raiders”, as reported by @PatMcAfeeShow.
The injury occurred early in the second quarter while Shrader was attempting an extra point. Raiders safety Tristin McCollum dove in an effort to block the kick but arrived late, colliding directly with Shrader’s leg.
The 25-year-old kicker immediately left the field and did not return, with subsequent evaluations confirming the severity of the damage.

The loss is͏ a significant one for the Colts. Shrader had been ͏one of ͏the most accurate kickers in the NFL this season, converting 13 of 14͏ field goal attempts for a͏ 92.9 percent success rate and͏ hitting all ͏14 of ͏his extra point tries. His only͏ miss ͏came in ͏Week 3 on a 51-yard attempt against the Tennessee Titans.
Remarkably, Shrader’s 13 field ͏goals made were the most in ͏the ͏league ͏through five weeks,͏ even though he did not attempt one against ͏the Raiders.
Shrader͏’s͏ ͏reliability had become a cornerstone of the Colts’ ͏offense. One of his defining moments came in ͏Week 2 against͏ the Denver Broncos, when he nailed ͏a ͏45-yard field goal as time expired to seal the win. It was a redemption kick after missing a 60-yarder moments earlier, which he was allowed to redo following a leverage penalty on Denver.
His consistency earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for September, and he was expected to be the Colts’ long-term solution at kicker after the team released veteran Matt Gay in April.
Now, the Colts face a new challenge: finding a replacement with no kickers currently on the practice squad. Potential free-agent targets include former Colts Rodrigo Blankenship and Michael Badgley, both of whom have prior experience with the team but come with limitations in long-range attempts.
Other options like Jus͏tin Tucker and ͏Dustin H͏opkins are also available, though both struggled with͏ accuracy in 202͏4.
With a Week 6 ͏matchup against the Arizona Cardinals looming, the Colts must act quickly to sign a kicker and adjust their special teams strategy. Replacing Shrader’s accuracy and poise will not be easy, and it is a problem that could have significant implications ͏for the Colts’ playoff aspirations.
