‘I Question the Upside’ — NFL Draft Experts Debate CJ Allen vs. Jacob Rodriguez As LB1 on Football Debate Club

CJ Allen and Jacob Rodriguez dominate the LB1 conversation, but doubts about their profiles raise questions about Round 1 value.

The linebacker debate in the 2026 NFL Draft class is far from settled, and two names that are bound to be at the center of that conversation are CJ Allen and Jacob Rodriguez. Both prospects bring high skill sets, yet neither is universally viewed as a clear-cut first-round talent.

As teams evaluate off-ball LBs in a league that increasingly values coverage ability and versatility, the margin for error becomes smaller. That uncertainty was on full display during a recent episode of PFSN’s “Football Debate Club.”

CJ Allen, Jacob Rodriguez Compared as LB1 Debate Heats Up Ahead of NFL Draft

With differing strengths and limitations, Allen and Rodriguez represent two very different archetypes at the position. During the discussion on the show hosted by PFSN’s Cam Mellor, the big question remains: which one, if any, deserves to be LB1, and is either worth a Round 1 pick?

NFL draft analyst Ian Cummings offered a measured take when asked whether either linebacker should be considered in the first round.

“I’m not sure I would draft either one in round one,” said Cummings. “I’ve got concerns about CJ Allen’s coverage ability. I think he’s decent, serviceable, but I questioned the upside.”

His evaluation highlights a key concern about Allen: while dependable, he may lack the high-end traits teams often seek in early selections. Cummings then explained why Rodriguez slightly edges Allen in his personal rankings, despite both not being perfect prospects.

“With Jacob Rodriguez, I do think the size profile hurts him a little bit, but if I was going to pick one of them to go round one myself, I would pick Jacob Rodriguez,” he added. “The athletic profile is elite. The coverage profile is elite. The instincts are top shelf. And even though he doesn’t have the arm length to stack and shed consistently, he does have the voracious physical play style, and the tenacity, the play pace that you would want. It’s emboldened by his confidence in his football IQ.”

From the PFSN scouting report perspective, Allen’s appeal lies in his balance of traditional LB traits and modern athleticism.

“CJ Allen is the consummate old-school linebacker prospect with new-school athletic gifts…Allen’s quick ascent as a defensive leader bodes well for his NFL projection, and it’s the blend of mental and physical tools that generates allure.”

That combination shows up in how he processes plays and delivers contact, as “he reads and reacts without delay, delivers punishing physicality as a block take-on defender,” the report further noted.

Statistically, Allen backed that up with steady production. He posted an 81.8 LB score with a B- grade on PFSN’s CFB LB Impact Metrics. While not elite across the board, his consistency reflects a solid, dependable contributor.

Rodriguez, on the other hand, offers a more dynamic but polarizing profile. According to PFSN’s scouting report, “Rodriguez will be a polarizing prospect because of his lacking size and length, and that size profile does negatively affect his block take-on and contact authority.”

His ability in space stands out: “He’s sticky overtop sit routes, swings, and in-breakers, he’s fast-flowing and relentless on the chase in the run game, and his untethered energy permeates to his teammates. Best fitting behind a strong defensive line that keeps him clean, Rodriguez has impact starter upside,” the report mentioned.

The numbers reinforce that upside. Rodriguez recorded a 90.1 LB score, ranking No. 2 overall with an A- grade on the PFSN CFB LB Impact Metrics. His production and range make him one of the most impactful LBs in this draft cycle.

According to PFSN’s Consensus Big Board, Allen holds an 84.75 grade, ranking No. 32 overall and projecting as a Round 2–3 selection. On the other hand, Rodriguez holds an 84.50 grade, ranking No. 41 overall and projecting as a Round 2–3 selection.

This debate may ultimately come down to team preference and scheme fit. Allen offers stability and physicality, while Rodriguez brings explosiveness and coverage upside.
