The 2024 NFL season delivered a shocking blow to the San Francisco 49ers when star running back Christian McCaffrey suffered bilateral Achilles tendinitis and a knee injury. The All-Pro back missed most of the season, playing in only four games.
Now, his father Ed McCaffrey, who played 13 seasons in the NFL, is speaking out about his son’s recovery and future longevity in the league.
Ed McCaffrey Defends Son’s Training Approach and Future
In an interview with Kyle Odegard of SportsCasting, Ed McCaffrey discussed multiple topics, including the McCaffreys’ new food product business, McCaffrey brands, and his son’s challenging 2024 season.
The former Denver Broncos receiver revealed that Christian has been training differently this offseason. Ed McCaffrey attributes overtraining to his son’s injuries leading up to last season.
“He’s patient this year,” Ed McCaffrey said. “Last year he was really eager to get to the field after they lost the Super Bowl. He couldn’t wait to play again and probably over-trained a little bit going into training camp. But this year he’s got a great plan. He’s been religious about it, getting great workouts in and trying to stay patient. We’re going to blink and they’re going to be suiting up for Week 1. It’s going to be here before we know it, and he’ll be ready.”

The numbers tell the story of McCaffrey’s difficult 2024 campaign. After returning from injury, he managed just 50 carries for 202 yards with no touchdowns. He also caught 15 passes on 19 targets for 146 yards and no touchdowns.
This production was a dramatic drop from his dominant 2023 season, where he had 272 carries for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also added 67 catches on 83 targets for 564 yards and seven touchdowns that year.
McCaffrey just turned 29 years old, an age where many question a running back’s longevity. However, his father believes concerns about career length are overblown for elite players.
“Longevity (concerns at running back) are way overblown,” Ed McCaffrey said. “If you look back to some of the running backs that have been the great running backs in this league, some of them played for 15 years. Emmitt Smith played what, 15 years? And a lot of really great running backs played 12, 13 years.”
McCaffrey’s Injury History and 49ers’ Championship Window
While Ed McCaffrey points to historical examples of longevity, those players represent outliers in NFL history. Other elite running backs throughout league history have played for shorter periods.
Barry Sanders played 10 years, Jim Brown played nine years, and Walter Payton fell into the latter point of Ed McCaffrey’s discussion, playing 13 years. Each of these Hall of Fame backs faced different circumstances and career arcs.
Christian McCaffrey brings a unique skill set as both a runner and receiver. This dual-threat ability has made him invaluable to the 49ers’ offense when healthy.
However, he has faced injury concerns before. McCaffrey played just 10 games over two seasons (2020 and 2021), raising questions about his durability even before the 2024 setbacks.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan remains optimistic about McCaffrey’s offseason recovery. Shanahan recently praised his star player’s work ethic, saying that “he is a psycho in a good way.”
The 49ers face increased pressure to maximize their championship window. McCaffrey is just one season removed from winning the Offensive Player of the Year award. With wide receiver Deebo Samuel being traded to Washington, the 49ers need McCaffrey healthy to maintain their offensive firepower.
The upcoming season will test whether McCaffrey’s adjusted training approach can help him return to his 2023 form. His health and production will be crucial factors in San Francisco’s pursuit of another Super Bowl appearance.
