Christen Miller’s NFL Draft Potential

Christen Miller is the latest to exit the Georgia defensive tackle pipeline, and like many others before him, he could ultimately command early-round capital. The prime question is where he ultimately settles in, and in a wide open DT class, first-round capital is on the table. Having said that, there’s a disconnect between Miller’s peak draft range and his production to this point, and his evaluation requires a certain amount of projection.

At 6’4″, 315 pounds, Miller has the desired mass, natural leverage, and length, and he can leverage his physical tools into overwhelming hand force, driving power, and strength at the point of attack.

He’s already produced a highlight reel of plays resetting interior gaps in run defense. With his cinder block hands and relentless extensions, he can shock blockers into stasis, then capture gaps and wall off running lanes with a sturdy base. He’s also proven he can recognize plays based on blocking schemes, shift across-face with his lateral agility, and meet pullers in the hole.

Miller’s extremely high floor in run defense is part of what makes him so appealing, but it comes at the cost of refinement as a pass-rusher. Miller’s PFF pressure rate is just 4.3% to this point, and he has yet to accrue a single sack in seven games, or add to his career total of 2.5.

There are glimpses of what he can become; he can win with brutal power or quick swims, flashing the requisite base load, quick twitch, and hand violence. Right now, however, those glimpses are too sparse from start to finish, and hip stiffness further detracts from his pass-rush upside.

As a developmental 3-tech with some measured alignment versatility, Miller is worthy of early-to-mid Day 2 capital, but Round 1 might be a stretch at this point. Coaches can take solace in the fact that he’ll be a high-level run defender right away, and his sheer line-resetting presence can free up other defenders to make plays in pursuit.

Where Is Miller Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?

Miller currently holds the No. 250 overall rank among prospects, reflecting his standing among mid-round prospects. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 207.1 as of October 13 reflects that he is typically being selected in the middle rounds.

Interestingly, his ADP is higher than his rank, suggesting that users are targeting him more aggressively than his positional ranking might indicate.

Users controlling the Atlanta Falcons have been the team that selected Miller the most frequently over the past week, accounting for 0.7% of their picks across all seven rounds.
