Christen Miller’s NFL Draft Potential

Christen Miller is the latest to exit the Georgia defensive tackle pipeline, and like many others before him, he could ultimately command early-round capital. The prime question is where he ultimately settles in, and in a wide-open DT class, first-round capital is on the table. Having said that, there’s a disconnect between Miller’s peak draft range and his production to this point, and his evaluation requires a certain amount of projection.

At 6’4″, 315 pounds, Miller has the desired mass, natural leverage, and length, and he can leverage his physical tools into overwhelming hand force, driving power, and strength at the point of attack. He’s already produced a highlight reel of plays resetting interior gaps in run defense. With his cinder-block hands and relentless extensions, he can shock blockers into stasis, then capture gaps and wall off running lanes with a sturdy base. He’s also proven he can recognize plays based on blocking schemes, shift across-face with his lateral agility, and meet pullers in the hole.

Miller’s extremely high floor in run defense is part of what makes him so appealing, but it comes at the cost of refinement as a pass-rusher. Miller’s PFF pressure rate is just 4.3% to this point, and he has yet to accrue a single sack in seven games or add to his career total of 2.5. There are glimpses of what he can become; he can win with brutal power or quick swims, flashing the requisite base load, quick twitch, and hand violence. Right now, however, those glimpses are too sparse from start to finish, and hip stiffness further detracts from his pass-rush upside.

As a developmental 3-tech with some measured alignment versatility, Miller is worthy of early-to-mid Day 2 capital, but Round 1 might be a stretch at this point. Coaches can take solace in the fact that he’ll be a high-level run defender right away, and his sheer line-resetting presence can free up other defenders to make plays in pursuit.

CFB Week 9 Update

Georgia was on a bye week in Week 9, but the Bulldogs will be back in action in Week 10 against the Florida Gators. For Christen Miller, the Gators’ offensive front will present a formidable challenge. On the interior, Jake Slaughter is an experienced blocker who manages his leverage and pad level well, while tackles Austin Barber and Caden Jones both have the size and length to drive interior linemen out of gaps on down blocks. It’ll be up to Miller to use his explosive first step and heavy hands to control the contact point and occlude interior gaps for opposing rushers.

CFB Week 10 Update

Miller didn’t fill the stat sheet in Georgia’s 24-20 win over Florida, but his impact was nonetheless felt on the field through all four quarters. He’s still not the level of pass-rusher to consistently disrupt 1-on-1, but his explosive first step showed up as an asset when moving to win at initial contact and reset the line in the run game.

Miller proved incredibly sturdy against double-teams from both 1-tech and 3-tech, using his initial burst and hand power to reset the line, prevent displacement, and constrict running lanes. That’s where Miller’s early utility will lie in the NFL, but his linear explosiveness and raw power also present clear pass-rush upside.

CFB Week 11 Update

Miller was one of the Bulldogs’ key defenders in a blowout Week 11 victory over Mississippi State. His primary function was once again as a run defender, using his cinderblock hands to pop and control blocks, as well as his lower-body strength to encumber double-teams and prevent displacement.

But Miller also flashed promise as a pass-rusher, caving in interior blocks with explosive power. The key separator for his stock is going to be his pass-rush upside. On occasion, he shows glimpses of good bend and lateral agility working on the rush, but it’s too inconsistent right now to suggest first-round pass-rush upside. As of now, Top 50 is where he’s settled out for me.

CFB Week 12 Update

Miller didn’t produce much in Georgia’s Week 12 blowout win against Texas, but his heavy-handed profile proved impactful for helping the Bulldogs reset the line — particularly in the run game.

When the Longhorns’ running game stalled out and Arch Manning was forced to become a volume thrower, Georgia was able to play more aggressive, and Miller was a part of that. Nothing has changed with his evaluation over the past few weeks. There’s immediate utility, and there’s upside yet to be realized — but he remains a compelling prospect.

Where Is Miller Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?

Miller currently holds the No. 43 overall rank among prospects, positioning him as a Day 2 prospect. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 48.7 as of November 19 reflects that he is typically being selected in the second or third round.

The gap between his rank and ADP indicates that while he’s highly regarded on our board, draft simulators are seeing him slide slightly, possibly due to team needs or positional value considerations.

Users controlling the Atlanta Falcons have been the team that selected Miller the most frequently over the past week, accounting for 4.3% of their picks across all seven rounds.
