Christen Miller’s NFL Draft Potential

Christen Miller is the latest to exit the Georgia defensive tackle pipeline, and like many others before him, he could ultimately command early-round capital. The prime question is where he ultimately settles in, and in a wide-open DT class, first-round capital is on the table. Having said that, there’s a disconnect between Miller’s peak draft range and his production to this point, and his evaluation requires a certain amount of projection.

At 6’4″, 315 pounds, Miller has the desired mass, natural leverage, and length, and he can leverage his physical tools into overwhelming hand force, driving power, and strength at the point of attack. He’s already produced a highlight reel of plays resetting interior gaps in run defense. With his cinder-block hands and relentless extensions, he can shock blockers into stasis, then capture gaps and wall off running lanes with a sturdy base. He’s also proven he can recognize plays based on blocking schemes, shift across-face with his lateral agility, and meet pullers in the hole.

Miller’s extremely high floor in run defense is part of what makes him so appealing, but it comes at the cost of refinement as a pass-rusher. Miller’s PFF pressure rate was just 4.3% as of Week 8. To his credit, Miller’s PFF pressure rate has since improved to 8.8% in the five games since, and he’s also accrued 1.5 sacks over that span.

There are clear glimpses of what Miller can become; he can win with brutal power or quick swims, flashing the requisite base load, quick twitch, and hand violence. And while those glimpses can still be more consistent, he ended the regular season on an extremely high note, landing a solid PFSN DT Impact grade of 77. Another inspiring nugget: Per TruMedia, he allowed just 1.47 yards gained per run stop.

As a developmental 3-tech with some measured alignment versatility, Miller is worthy of early-to-mid Day 2 capital, but Round 1 might be a stretch at this point. Coaches can take solace in the fact that he’ll be a high-level run defender right away—who can effectively rotate between 1-tech and 3-tech, encumbering double-teams and combo blocks as well as controlling 1-on-1—and his sheer line-resetting presence can free up other defenders to make plays in pursuit. And at his best, he does have the requisite bend and lateral agility to work well on the rush.

Miller’s ultimate upside as a pass-rush presence is unclear, as he does have moderate hip stiffness that can limit his range and recalibration quickness on counters. Nevertheless, he has the high-level linear explosiveness and power to underscore an eventual rise as a violent 1-on-1 disruptor, in addition to his immediately actionable run defense.

Where Is Miller Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?

Miller currently holds the No. 37 overall rank among prospects, positioning him as a Day 2 prospect. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 46.3 as of December 6 reflects that he is typically being selected in the second or third round.

The gap between his rank and ADP indicates that while he’s highly regarded on our board, draft simulators are seeing him slide slightly, possibly due to team needs or positional value considerations.

Users controlling the Atlanta Falcons have been the team that selected Miller the most frequently over the past week, accounting for 4.4% of their picks across all seven rounds.
