The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the best wide receiver groups in the NFL, with the likes of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans sticking together. Godwin returned to the team as an unrestricted free agent this offseason and signed a massive three-year, $66 million deal to stay in Tampa Bay.
Last year, in Week 7, the 29-year-old receiver suffered a dislocated ankle and missed the remainder of the season. Godwin was having a dominant season at the time, as he had 50 receptions for 576 yards with five receiving touchdowns before suffering the injury.
For the upcoming season, there have been questions regarding Godwin’s status. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles addressed the latest update on the wideout heading into training camp.
Todd Bowles Provides Chris Godwin Injury Update
Getting Godwin on the field will make Tampa Bay’s offense even better going forward. During media availability, Bowles addressed Godwin’s status and provided a bit of an update.
“He is working hard, and we will see more at training camp.”
Bowles also mentioned that he hopes Godwin to be healthy enough to play Week 1 on the road against the Atlanta Falcons.

Tampa Bay also addressed the wide receiver position during the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Emeka Egbuka in the first round and drafting Tez Johnson in Round 7. In addition, they signed Garrett Greene as an undrafted free agent to give the team more skill-position weapons.
The Buccaneers have one of the top offenses in the NFL returning. Last season, they were able to finish with a 90.7 grade, according to PFSN’s Offense+ metrics — which was third in the league behind the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens.
With quarterback Baker Mayfield throwing the football at an excellent level, the Buccaneers are in a great position to put up similar offensive numbers, which led them to winning the NFC South. However, having a solidified WR2 like Godwin on the roster and fully healthy is going to help the offense even more.
The receiving duo of Godwin and Evans is a matchup nightmare for most defenses. It allows the team to move the ball down the field quickly and opens up much more for other players as well.
Getting back Godwin is going to be imperative for Tampa Bay. And seeing how he looks after a gruesome ankle injury is significant for the 2025 Buccaneers’ chances of making a run at the Lombardi Trophy.
