The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t slowing down anytime soon. After three straight Super Bowl appearances, including two wins and the most recent loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the dynasty is far from over. In fact, it appears to be evolving.
However, the one issue they had to address going into 2025 was their offensive line.
With Joe Thuney off to the Bears, the Chiefs knew they couldn’t afford to lose their trench warriors. So they made the smart move of locking down Trey Smith with a contract that many players can only dream of.
How Did Trey Smith Turn His $94 Million Deal Into a Family Moment?
In true Smith style, he turned it into a moment for the ages. As the ink dried on his four-year, $94 million extension, Smith decided to pick up his phone and call his dad, Henry Smith.
“I appreciate everything you and Mom did for me to get to this moment,” Smith told him during the video call. “I understand it wouldn’t be possible without y’all’s sacrifice.”
Henry, without missing a beat, reminded Smith of the sweaty Tennessee summers, grinding on fields while others lounged indoors. “You were dedicated. I remember those summers being in the yard working hard…while everybody else was enjoying the air conditioner and watching TV,” he said. “You make me very proud.”

It was truly a full-circle moment for a player who didn’t have it easy. Smith was ESPN’s No. 1 recruit in the 2017 class. Unfortunately, he had a medical scare with blood clots early in his college career. However, he fought through this and returned to start every game at Tennessee, earning All-SEC First Team honors twice.
Then came the NFL Draft, and despite his talent, he fell to the sixth round. Kansas City saw something that other teams didn’t and gave him a shot. The Chiefs had used the non-exclusive franchise tag on Smith earlier this year to buy time, but they didn’t wait long to commit. After all, Smith has been loyal to the team since day one.
What Makes This Contract Extension So Significant for Kansas City?
Smith, as a rookie, started all 17 regular-season games and three playoff contests for the Chiefs. He continued playing a crucial role in 2022, starting 16 regular-season games and anchoring the offensive line through the playoffs, culminating in a Super Bowl LVII win where Kansas City didn’t allow a single sack against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 2023, Smith started all games, including the team’s Super Bowl LVIII win over the 49ers. By 2024, he helped guide the team back to yet another Super Bowl, though they fell short in a rematch against the Eagles.
Now, Smith is the highest-paid guard in the NFL. His $23.5 million average annual salary beats even Landon Dickerson’s recent record. And with $70 million guaranteed, the Chiefs are making a statement.

With Creed Humphrey already anchoring the line at the center position, Kansas City now boasts the richest center-guard combo in league history. And if protecting Patrick Mahomes is priority one, that mission is accomplished.
Smith’s new contract locks him in with the Chiefs through the 2028 season. That gives Kansas City a four-year window to get the best out of him. Of course, that assumes he stays healthy and continues to dominate in the trenches.
