Kansas City’s offseason is already layered with uncertainty, but no question looms larger than the future of one of the franchise’s defining figures. After a season that reminded everyone why he is still one of the league’s most impactful tight ends, Travis Kelce is again forcing fans to wait for clarity. This time, however, his own words suggest the conversation is far from over.
Travis Kelce Leaves the Door Open on Another NFL Season
Kelce addressed his future during the latest episode of the “New Heights” podcast, stopping short of making a firm decision while making it clear that retirement is not a foregone conclusion. The 13-year veteran framed his outlook around one variable above all else: how his body responds once the season fully settles.
Travis Kelce on his potential retirement 👀
“If my body can heal up and rest up and I can feel confident that I can go out there and give it another 18, 20, 21 week run.….I think I would do it in a heartbeat” #ChiefsKingdom

“If my body can heal up and rest up and I can feel confident that I can go out there and give it another 18, 20, 21 week run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat,” Kelce said. “So, I think right now it’s just finding that answer and seeing how the body feels after this game and kind of when it all settles down.”
That statement alone was enough to reignite debate among Chiefs fans, especially after a 2025 season that marked a bounce-back from the least productive year of Kelce’s career as a starter. Despite turning 36 during the season, Kelce earned his 11th consecutive Pro Bowl nod and continued to serve as a central piece of Kansas City’s offense.
Still, the circumstances around him are different from those they were in earlier in his career. Kelce is set to reach free agency when the league year turns over, following the expiration of the two-year restructure he signed before the 2024 season. He also acknowledged that early conversations with the organization have already taken place.
“Just being a regular human for a couple weeks, maybe a month or so, and try to figure out what I’m going to do next in terms of my future in football,” Kelce said. “I’ve talked to a few people in the facility already, having the exit meetings and everything. They know where I stand, at least right now.”
The comparison point is unavoidable. Kelce is now the same age Jason Kelce was when he stepped away from football, and only Marcedes Lewis remains older among active tight ends.
Even so, Travis laughed off teammate Chris Jones’ recent suggestion that he would be back next season, signaling that no decision has been made yet.
If this does turn out to be the end, Kelce’s résumé is already sealed. He surpassed 13,000 career receiving yards in Week 18, moved into the top 10 all-time in receptions, and leaves behind a legacy as one of the most productive tight ends the league has ever seen.
