Chiefs Predicted to Draft Rueben Bain Jr., Forming a ‘Dynamic, High-Motor Edge Duo’ With George Karlaftis

A new mock draft predicting the Kansas City Chiefs will select Rueben Bain Jr. could maximize George Karlaftis on the edge.

The Kansas City Chiefs already have a rising force in George Karlaftis, but their defensive front could soon become even more dangerous. With the draft approaching, projections are linking Kansas City to a relentless edge presence who thrives on disruption and effort.

Rueben Bain Jr. is emerging as that name, a high-motor defender whose explosiveness and physicality could perfectly complement Karlaftis. If this pairing becomes reality, the Chiefs could be building one of the most relentless young edge duos in the league.

How the Chiefs Could Boost Their Pass Rush by Pairing Rueben Bain Jr. With George Karlaftis

Per a recent report, the Chiefs are eyeing the University of Miami’s star defensive end, Bain, as a potential addition to strengthen their pass rush ahead of the draft. Bain’s 2025 season production shows why he’s rising up boards.

He recorded 54 total tackles, including 30 solo, along with 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also added one forced fumble and one interception, highlighting his ability to impact both the pass and run games.

Looking at his college career, Bain has totaled 121 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, and 20.5 sacks across three seasons. His breakout freshman campaign included 44 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, establishing him as one of the most disruptive young edge rushers in the country.

The Chiefs do not need another defensive end like Karlaftis for depth. They need one to take their defense from very good to dominant. Right now, the unit works, but it is still heavily dependent on Chris Jones to create consistent disruption from the interior.

Karlaftis has developed into a reliable, high-effort edge rusher who wins with power and technique. However, he is not the kind of elite, explosive threat who commands constant double teams. Without a true running mate on the opposite side, offenses can shift protection and limit the overall impact of the Chiefs’ edge pressure.

defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo relies on aggressive schemes built around pressure and disguise. For that system to truly dominate, it needs multiple edge rushers who can win one-on-one matchups. If that second threat is missing, the defense becomes easier to read and less effective against top offenses.

That becomes even more critical in the AFC, where quarterbacks like Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson can exploit even the smallest weaknesses. Against that level of competition, relying on just one or two pass rushers is not enough to consistently close games.

Adding another defensive end is not about replacing Karlaftis. It is about maximizing him. With a true complementary piece, the Chiefs can create constant pressure from both edges and turn their defense into a unit that dictates games rather than reacts to them.
