Kansas City Chiefs star Rashee Rice released a statement via his agent after being sentenced to five years’ probation and 30 days of jail time. The sentence was handed to Rice on Thursday, July 17, over a year after his street-racing accident in Dallas, Texas.
What Did Rashee Rice Say After Receiving Sentence for 2024 Car Crash
It has long been expected that Rice would receive a suspension from the NFL after causing a six-car crash in March 2024. Details of the player’s suspension were always going to be withheld until the legal system had dealt with the matter first.
That was the case on July 17, as Rice received his sentence, including 30 days of jail time. Rice’s agent released a statement on his behalf soon after the sentencing, in which the player vowed to make up for his mistakes.
“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.
In a media release, Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s lawyer Royce West released this statement on Rice’s behalf:

“I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”
The crash began with Rice’s Lamborghini Urus and involved six cars , with two people requiring hospital treatment. Rice, along with four other men, was seen fleeing from the scene on foot, without checking on the welfare of the other people involved.
Suspension Incoming for Rice, Dampening Excitement Around His Comeback
Rice will be able to serve his 30-day jail time at any point during his five-year probation, but his NFL suspension will be far more set in stone, as Rice’s decision to flee the scene would not have gone down well with the league’s decision makers.
Minnesota Vikings receiver Jordan Addison is also expected to be suspended for a driving-related offense as he pleaded no contest to “reckless driving with the involvement of alcohol” on the same day to end his pending DUI case from 2024, according to ESPN. He will serve one year on probation, pay a $390 fine, and must complete two online courses.
It’s unclear how quickly the NFL will announce the punishments for both players, but there has been plenty of time to deliberate.
The Chiefs wide receiver suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4 of last season and was hoping to get back to his best this year. The promising player will now face another lengthy spell away from the field, likely to be a minimum of four games.
